To my surprise, I've noticed quite a lot of new cars, across several manufacturers, have been finished in a light grey - not metallic, just a dull, flat grey.

I know something like the choice of colour for your car is subjective, but it's a choice I find baffling. I mean... grey? It's boring, it's industrial. It's the colour of primer paint.

Bizarre.

Matt paint finishes are very much the in thing at the moment and the colour grey is also very much the in thing at the moment. Combine those two and what do you get?

And just to be clear, neither does anything at all for me either!

What will happen when all those keen owners start to polish these cars ?

The choice of colours for new cars does seem to be getting more limited, which is made worse by some manufacturers deciding that certain colours are only available on the base model, or with particular options that I don't want.

When I was buying the Jazz, there were only 6 colours to choose from: 2 whites, grey, black, blue and red. I don't like white or black cars and the blue was so dark it may as well have been black. I would have liked the red, but that only came with an all black interior. My previous 5 cars all had black interiors and I wanted a change, so I ended up with "Shining Grey" exterior and light gray half leather interior. Pretty boring, but at least it's not matt grey!

I've yet to see a Kia Niro-e in anything but grey. Maybe there aren't any other colours. I guess it must save the manufacturers a fair bit of money by not offering a wide range of options.

I'm quite fond of the gloss greys available, ford's offering is particularly nice ( in my eyes), not keen on the satin and matt finishes that some manufacturers offer, got stuck in traffic outside of a range rover dealership today, my god they have a awful range of colours.

It's a British thing. The French seem to have lived with dull colours (typically grey) for a very long time.

A light silvery grey is the standard no-cost colour on e-Niros. Most e-Niros are on PCP or lease deals where people don't intend to keep them so don't pay the extra for a different colour.

I recall when BT changed its corporate van colour from green to grey. Didn't last long, you couldn't see them in misty or foggy conditions. Hence the bright yellow Buzby.

The matt grey on the Audi A3 does it no favours. VW yellow looks awful as does some of the fluorescent greens. What these colours do to subsequent values and desirability is any ones guess. There was a survey a while back and orange was regarded to be the safest colour and easily spotted on the road.

There was another survey a much longer while back which settled on bright yellow. I think it was in the late 70s as several makers followed suit. I had a daffodil-yellow 1980 Maxi (good car - went to Switzerland in it), but the fad had passed by the time I sold it on in 1984.

My understanding is that the reason our emergency services use blue flashing lights is that blue was the the most noticeable colour to the eye?.

My VW Caddy van is ex British Gas and that shade of blue certainly catches the eye!

The '55 Chevy Custom in the film "Two Lane Blacktop" was flat primer grey.

This car, Lot 7003, sold at Barrett-Jackson’s Scottsdale, AZ, auction for $159,500, including buyer’s premium, on January 17, 2015.

That's the plan. If people hate the color they will pay for for their chosen color, resulting more profit for manufacturers.

Reminds me of the battleship grey colour that everything got painted in when the MOD sold off stocks when they closed down their stores sites .

I once had an olive green Triumph. Never looked dirty, until the Winter road salt dried white on it.

When we bought our Puma,we really liked the grey matter until the salesman said it looked like primer, went for magnetic instead

Assuming its the colour I'm thinking of, there are a lot of them around!.

When I worked at the Aberdeen SAAB dealer in the 90's, one of the bosses pals had a 9000 saloon. It was a light, non metallic grey and, IMO, looked horrible. I was told it was a special order and certainly never saw another one that colour.

My car is gradually adapting itself to this new trend as the primer emerges from the sun eroded top coats.

To stop it going brown (rust) I apply sunflower oil sparingly and rub with aluminium, which is also grey.

Am I becoming a fashion victim?
