Hi,
Last week I managed to drive my car 5 miles with the oil filler cap not attached. There was no oil spray on my engine or under the bonnet, but the engine did start to falter and then there was a huge (and I do mean HUGE) amount of white smoke that exploded out of the exhaust. I stopped, waited 10 minutes after replacing the oil cap, started the engine, and the smoke was still evident. Another 10 minute wait and everything was OK, and has been ever since. Car feels normal again.
Can anyone explain why there was smoke and a faltering engine, and whether any lasting damage might have been down to engine, catalytic converter etc?
Many thanks,
Andy
