I’m currently looking for a 7 seater car and I’ve seen quite a few Japanese import which fit the bill but I’m just wondering if I would have problems in the future when trying to maintain or repair an imported car. Does anyone have experience of owning one and have they been able to source Servicing and repairs from just normal local garages??

I've had three imports. Parts aren't generally very hard to find or very expensive, but you need to know where to look and it's normally best to buy them yourself and give them to the garage to minimise teett sucking.

Your best bet is to join a model specific forum and see what they say.

Edit to add - I'm talking about Toyota Estimas, Mazda Bongoes etc. Mitsuoka parts are going to be trickier.

I've had my V6 Estima for over 6 years now..been totally reliable and required only usual service parts that you can get easily (eBay/ECP..I use Blueprint stuff usually)

Do your homework and as above, I usually source the parts myself and hand them to my garage for fitting.

The likes of toyoDIY and Megazip are good places to search for part numbers/model info etc.

There are a lot of variations in the models so search carefully.

Generally you should have few concerns about a JDM import..in fact they seem to get ever more popular.

A friend of a friend had a JDM Subaru a good few years back.

Mechanical bits were, in the main, common to UK models - the problem came when the car needs other parts such as body panels, plastic bits such as lamps, plastic covers etc etc. He had the car for 3/4 years.

Insurance was more expensive and he had to go the smaller insurers that specialise in insurance for imported cars, modified cars etc etc, On-line comparison site insurers would probably not quote as "Your requirements" are not standard!
