What colour is the fluid on the dipstick?

Pink - OK

Brown/brownish get it changed

Fluid change is cheaper than a gearbox repair.

Several Premium priced car manufacturers, MB, BMW etc used to claim their transmissions sealed for life only for some transmissions to fail at under 100K. Out of warranty and very expensive for the owner

Lifetime = length of warranty...

Your gearbox is an Aisin 4 speed - same as Vauxhall Agila. It uses Aisin T-IV fluid. You can buy from ebay, it will be a lot cheaper than the dealer. Bear in mind that a drain/refill will only change 50% of the fluid - the rest stays in the gearbox. 2x drain/refill will refresh 75% of the fluid.

I'd worry about buying mysterious fluids from ebay, despite the convenience and cost advantage. Seems like there would be a greater risk of it being fake.

I think that would be a vanishingly small percentage. And one never knows how hard they have had to work, e.g. towing caravans, boy racing etc. If the garage, which usually welcomes the prospect of service work, has advised it is not necessary, I would be inclined to concur. If it works, don't mend it. We have bought used autos for nigh on 40yrs and driven them well into six figure mileages (one, a Passat, to over 242,000), and never had any problems.
