VW Golf - car loans with added benefits - Golf GTDI

Hi all,

Looking to buy my next car with a car loan. I know the AA provide free breakdown cover with their loans, do any other companies offer additional benefits?

TIA

It isn't free breakdown cover, the interest rates of the loan pays for it.

Choose your loan based on on the best loan, not who is offering the shiniest trinkets to try and make you overlook the most important thing, the interest you are paying.

Actually I think that is a common misconception. With a loan you can't give something away for 'free' it it's paid for by the interest. And besides their cheapest breakdown cover is £6 a month, over the life of a loan that is considerably better than a slightly cheaper rate.

I've done the maths using moneyfacts.co.uk

Loan: £10,000 over 5 years at 3%

Monthly repayment £221.16

Total payable - £10,615.89

Breakdown at £6/m over 5 years = £360

You would need to find a loan at 1.5% to compete with the offer, a loan that cheap doesn't exist.

So whether it's paid for by the interest or not it still works out cheaper.

Which is why I asked the question. I'm happy to workout the difference on any loan benefit that anyone finds.

TIA

GTDI you may want to revisit your maths. £10,615 is the 48 months total, not 60 months (5 years). I thought it looked too cheap,

The marginal cost for the AA company providing the cover will be fairly low, so it is not far off being free. Whether the rates they offer are the best, compared with those of a bank, for example, is another matter.

I find it hard to believe that interest rate on a 5 year car loan.

What happened to the PCP from 18 months ago?

Same questions for a loan now?????????????

Is this subliminal advertising?

ha ha, sadly I'm not on commission, I like to buy my cars with added extras. This is market research.

I got my insurance through Vitality as they offered a free coffee each month and reduced excess for good driving.

O2 give me weekly coffee from my phone contract.

Perhaps I should google loans with free coffee

Insurance is way too subjective because the cost of the premium and level of 'freebies' won't say how good the quality of customer care if you make a claim.

The reason for the 'freebies' are to hook you in as a customer. What you have to do is determine a) whether you'd be buying the 'freebie' anyway if they weren't 'giving it away', b) the quality of that freebie (maybe bad coffee) compared to what you normally buy and c) the total cost to you of buying a product with no 'freebies' and them added on.

The same would go for them for a car loan. Sometimes it will be in your favour, sometimes not. It may be that they can get a decent 'freebie' in bulk at a big discount which will save you money, but other times it's better to buy the products separately because they are cheaper or better products (e.g. the coffee).

I wonder what the AA would say if you asked them whether they'd do a lower interest rate with no freebies?

Comparing should be relatively straight forward in general, using a spreadsheet. Just remember, it's only worth considering freebies if you were going to buy them separately anyway or are really useful but previously out of your budget (i.e. if the overall 'cost' gives the latter a big discount).

A cheaper interest rate policy with no freebies would probably pay for a LOT of coffee, especially if you make it yourself!

Probably very true, but there is still value in it..............if you breakdown.

VW Golf - car loans with added benefits - Big John

Probably very true, but there is still value in it..............if you breakdown.

You only get the basic AA breakdown cover. "not within 1/4 mile of registered address and just local recovery to garage."

Much better cover with Autonational or Startrescue. Focus on interest levels on car loan

Also mentioned above :- Struggling with the maths - £221.16 multiplied by 60 (5 years of 12 monthly payments) =£13269.60 not "Total payable - £10,615.89"

In addition the interest rate offered depends on your personal circumstances / credit record.

Correct figures BJ, I didn't think to check that,

Would have been an exceptionally good deal though, £600 interest on £10k over 5 years!

:-)

Admittingly I accidently put 48 months!!!!!

moneyfacts.co.uk/loans/loan-calculator/

According to them with 60 months the total paid is £10770.43

Perhaps moneyfacts need to check their calculator.

I would assume the site is mathematically accurate. Unless you already have a loan arranged you may it hard to actually get one at 3%.

VW Golf - car loans with added benefits - Brit_in_Germany

There are banks on that site offering 2.8%.

VW Golf - car loans with added benefits - catsdad

Brit, yes I saw that but there is also a footnote to the effect that the actual APR depends on your circumstances. If the OP can get close to 3% it looks like a good deal.

Probably very true, but there is still value in it..............if you breakdown.

OP should buy a Toyota Corolla instead. :p

Less chance of a breakdown to start with & it will come with free Toyota Assistance for the 1st year. That is currently provided by the AA & is the full whack - including At Home & European cover. When that runs out it is currently ~ £74 p.a. to renew depending upon your payment method. It frequently features amongst the best cover breakdown cover that you can get.

Unfortunately £10k isn't enough to get into a current shape Corolla. Cheapest on Autotrader is £12995, and that's a Cat S.

An Auris then.

& if he is looking at a s/h car (I don't think that is explicitly stated anywhere) then the potential of a manufacturer's warranty (Toyota Relax) on an up to a 10 year old car may be attractive.

Best car loan "added benefit" (which did seem to be actually free) I have heard of (from someone in the trade) was as follows...

Geezer comes in with girl around close of business and surprises her by buying her a car. Girl is very exited and grateful, and they go off together for a very nice weekend. Nudge Nudge.

Geezer is oh-so-disappointed to be refused finance on Monday due to his bad credit rating, which he'd somehow forgotten about.

Allegedly was a very common routine, at least in Essex dealerships.
