Vauxhall Zafira - Thermostat issue? - Marconi41
Hi all. I have a Zafira 1.9 ctdi 150. I’ve noticed the temperature sits around 78c. I think this is too cold ?. Would that be a thermostat problem ? Or am I worrying about nothing ? It does occasionally get higher but goes straight back down . Thanks in advance ??

I guess there’s no temperature gauge on this , so where is the reading being taken from ?

The OBD port allows display of several sensor values with the right "widget" plugged in - I use a Scangauge II which is programmed to show air inlet temp, coolant temp, voltage and rpm

Good way to get the engine info. Unless you have a specific problem ,such as heater not efficient, then I would not worry about it . Diesel engines usually run a little cooler than the petrol models.

There’s a secret menu on these which shows the exact temperature. I don’t know what it was running at before though . I had loss of heat from the heaters but I checked the coolant and water a little low so topped up and no problem since . Do diesels not have to reach a certain temperature to do a regen though ? I was told the thermostat should open around 84c. But the pipe is defo cold until 78ish. Also the radiator never seems to get warm ???????. But im obviously no expert in these things

The question that always comes to me is - the temp may be 'exact', but is it accurate ? That will need a sensor of some sort sending a signal to an electronic display; either one may introduce inaccuracy. If it always reads the same, at least the system is stable. If the readout starts to vary, that is the time to worry. Do you get heat after a few miles driving ?

My diesel runs at a displayed 90° by the way (gauge, not digital).

Using the obd socket gives accurate information processed from the engine ecu . Engine temps on these do run cool , and its not unusual for the stat to remain closed and thus the rad to stay cold . I would see what happens when the ambient temp increases.

Yep , I’ve got heat after a few miles . I’d say it gets upto 78c after about 4 miles . It can drop to 74 or raise to 84 if I’m going uphill . You see I’m told 90 is about right which Is why I was worried as thermostats open between 84-88. Me being an over thinker was worried it wouldn’t do a regen and eventually block the dpf
