Berlingo Multispace / Ford B or Grand C Max? - I need help choosing next vehicle - Mango67

Hi fellow petrolheads

I need help please on choosing my next vehicle:-) please :-)

I recently bought (3 months ago) a Berlingo Multispace 1.5 diesel hdiblu for a pet food delivery job I do and pet taxi work. I did alot of research beforehand ie space practicality and wanted sliding doors, economy reliability etc. Unfortunately, I broke my ankle 20 days ago badly 3 bones and have a long recovery ahead before I can drive again. It's been advised I get an automatic car going forward. So since I've had the Berlingo 2 batteries have been replaced couple of sensors issues and now nox sensor needs replacing, being done under warranty thankfully!

Shall I stick with Berlingo (just blips) and go automatic or change brand ie to a Ford Grande C Max with sliding doors ie more reliable or can anyone think of another vehicle that will be good as an automatic for my needs . I want compact smallish for nipping around cities towns ? Must be reliable!

Thank you

T J C

Hmm, bit suspicious here.

1, title says Berlingo/B-Max, but this then changes to Grand C-Max.

2, two replacement batteries in 3 months?

3, the TJC at the bottom being a 'link'

However, a Ford Grand C-Max (and the B-Max for that matter) uses a DCT automated manual, and they rarely make sense if buying second hand outwith warranty.

But if this is a genuine post, tell us what your budget is and some alternatives could be suggested.

Hi sorry if looks suspicious it's a genuine request sorry to confuse!

Title implies I am considering a Ford B Max or Grand C Max

The Berlingo broke down with battery that was apparently new and now the replacement has packed aswell might be connection prob? nox sensors has failed. Battery no biggy but doesn't give me confidence !

My budget is £9 to £10000.

My intitials are TJC but you can call me Tracey ??

Your help will be appreciated

I see the TJC is no longer highlighted as a link!.

For the reasons mentioned, I wouldn't have either Ford as an auto. First thing is that I think the sliding doors will have to be forgotten about as I can't think of anything within budget (and bearing in mind current used car prices are crazy!) with sliding doors, you certainly won't get into the auto version of the current shape Berlingo or its kissing cousins the Vauxhall Combo Life and Peugeot Rifter. Actually, you could get into a Mazda 5, which is a C-Max sized 7 seater with sliding doors, and the auto box is reliable, but they are not very common.

Another question is just how big does this car need to be?. The reason I ask is because the Ford B-Max isn't a big car, so if you don't need a big car, no real point in having one just for the inclusion of sliding doors (I'm assuming this is the reason there is no mention of the C-Max, only the Grand C-Max?). The Honda Jazz is at least as spacious as a B-Max, but has a much more reliable auto transmission. Slightly less spacious but equally reliable is the Toyota Yaris.

There are other C-Max sized options worth considering (without sliding doors). Vauxhall Zafira Tourer and Toyota Verso spring to mind.

Possibly an estate version of a Golf/Focus sized hatch depending on gearbox type.

Going back to sliding doors, if they really are a big thing, the only other suggestion I have would be to look into a JDM (Japanese) import MPV. Something like a Honda Stepwagon, Toyota Noah/Voxy and various others. If you choose to go down this route, go to a respected specialist in Japanese imports as you need to be sure everything needed has been done (underseal as they don't salt roads in Japan, and rear foglights fitted).

Hi Badbusdriver

So avoid Ford automatics? OK back to drawing board . Maybe just

Get another Berlingo but automatic and hope for best.!

The Mazda 5 I was looking at earlier ! Always any option.

Thank you for your honest opinion

First thought is how long will it be before you can drive again?

How far have you discussed the advice to go for an auto (ie second opinion etc)?

Get another Berlingo but automatic and hope for best.!

Yes, you could, but to get into an auto version of the current Berlingo, you'll need a lot more than £10k. I looked on Autotrader and the cheapest one is nearly £20k!. Expanding the search to include the otherwise identical Peugeot Rifter and Vauxhall Combo Life, the situation is only a little better with the Vauxhall starting just under £16k and the Peugeot about a grand more. Previous shape Berlingo 'auto' used an automated manual (ETG6) and as with most, are not that great.

Given you have a fairly healthy budget and given the current used car prices, might be worth looking at some kind of lease option for a new one rather than buying?.

Hi yes , I'm beginning to realise I'm not going to get what I need in the automatic sector with my budget.

Having watched programme on used car prices tonight . I'm going to keep my van and

Hope I can drive my manual after lots of physio. Too much money to lose onn trade in. Only just bought the manual Berlingo. If it's too difficult to depress clutch will rethink.

Thanks for help !

Give me a search area and I’ll have a look.
I’d also rule out a Powershift Ford, it’s the most unreliable transmission fitted to any modern car.

As you only bought your car 3 months ago, you shouldn't be much, if any, out of pocket by trading in (or selling it yourself). Used prices have been very high for well over a year now.

But you must do what you feel best for your own situation.

Good luck with your recovery though.
