VW Golf MK 5_2005 - Options for unwell automatic transmission - catfink

Hi,

The gearbox on my Automatic VW Golf MK 5 is lurching and not well, but there is no check engine light or error code.

Based on the sound of it/ how it drives, one garage said that the valve body needs replacing and would cost approx £500, but that they’re not able to do it (don’t do that model or something). Another garage said they couldn’t diagnose it without the error code, and a 3rd said the whole transmission would need to be rebuilt (£2,500 + VAT).

So my question is- if the fault is with the valve body as the 1st garage says, in theory would it possible to replace/ refurbish just that without totally rebuilding the transmission?

Also, maybe it’s impossible to answer this, but might the check engine light be likely to show up at any point?

If the only option is to spend £3K, it makes sense to say goodbye...but hoping she can keep going for a bit. Any info greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Is there any way to check the ATF level/quality?

You need to take it to a dealer or Audi VW independent, or Specialist Auto gearbox place for an accurate diagnosis. Is the box an early DSG and do you no if the fluid has been changed regularly If repair is not viable then maybe a second hand unit is an option

Please can you advise which engine and fuel type is fitted to your car otherwise there are 3 possible automatic transmissions to discuss.

Can you also advise on the mileage covered?
