Ford Mondeo - Clunk noise when shifting gear - Qaisar Mahmood

Hi All,

I've recently bought Ford Mondeo 1.6 ecoboost 2012 (petrol) and noticed a clunk noise when shifting the gear from 3rd to 4th, there's no noise when shifting gear from 4th to 3rd or any other. There's also no noise when shifting the gear from 3rd to 4th when car is idle pr speed is lower than about 20mph.

There's also no noise if I shift the gear from 3rd to 4th rather slow, giving it a second or two in neutral and then shift slowly to 4th.

The local garage said its synchronisation issue and gearbox needs to be rebuilt which is rather too expensive for me to afford.

Could this issue be related to something else rather than the gearbox itself ?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

It does sound like a synchromesh issue. Is the "clunk" more of a "crunch"? There are still some great gearbox specialists around. I had our Panda gearbox rebuilt inc full clutch and every component in bellhousing replaced for around £600 inc removal/fitting and vat

I don't think its a crunch as the gear goes in without any hesitation/struggle.

I have had the issue looked at by another garage today and he thinks its a minor issue and doesn't require gearbox rebuilt at this point at least but suggested using some of additive in the gearbox to prevent it from any further damage? In your opinion, would that help?

I bought it from a private seller so I'm kind of out of options..

Which company did you use to rebuild your panda gearbox as I might give them a call to check costs etc..

In the past I've used gearbox Molyslip to some reasonable effect - usually preceded by a gearbox oil change. Doesn't usually fix it but sometimes can quieten things down a little bit and hopefully stop things from getting worse. A gearbox oil change is a good idea anyway!

The place I used for the rebuild was Wallis Auto Engineering Gearbox and Clutch Specialists based in Hull. The rebuilt Panda gearbox is still perfect quite a few years later.
