Toyota Carina E ('94) - Toyota Carina E-A worthwhile buy? - Alfred Rees-Glinos

Looking to potentially replace my current Ford Escort with a Toyota Carina E 1.6. I realise that the Carina is old hat, but they seem to have a reputation for great reliability. Does anyone have any experiences of them? Anything to look out for specifically? What is parts availability like (does it share a lot of its parts with the Avensis)? Will parts be more pricey generally than a Ford? Many thanks in advance, Alfie.

Carina e is pretty much indestructible. Go forever. Only points to watch are body rot and corrosion. Parts supply is still very good , but you are unlikely to need much . Avensis is a different car completely. Ford parts prices are getting out of hand , it’s cheaper to run a BMW or Mercedes.

Am I not right in thinking the Carina e is pretty much the same as a 1st gen Avensis, same basic body and running gear?.

If so, while I wouldn't be against getting a Carina e, I'm not sure why you'd choose one over the Avensis unless a particularly nice example has cropped up locally. As reliable as the Carina e is, being the younger car ('97-'03), presumably there will be more examples of the Avensis out there to choose from?.

Didn`t the Avensis have gearbox problems unlike the Carina e, friend of mine had Carina e for over 10 years without a problem, and then bought an Avensis to replace it but had 2 new gearboxes fitted in 5 years due to a bearing problem, some were notchy gear changers and some noisy, correct me if wrong?

Had a P-reg one on hire many years ago. I think it was virtually the last of the Carinas, the 1.8 E model. It was one of the very few hire cars that could match my Cavalier for fuel economy. Something tells me that they were galvanised. If that's true then maybe worth a punt but it will be a very old car so some spares may be hard to get.

Petrol versions are good for at least 400,000 miles.

My Dad bought a Carina E 1.6 auto in 1994. Mum took it on when Dad died and eventually passed it on to a granddaughter when she could no longer drive: so far as I know, it's still going well.

Parts? I don't think that it ever needed any, apart from normal maintenance!

I drove it once or twice and for sure, as has been mentioned, it was not a 'driver's car' but very quiet and comfortable when making steady progress. It was a while back now but I seem to remember that the interior was not at all a bad place to be.

If I remember correctly the original Carina was built in Japan and the E announced that it was a Carina built for Europe and maybe one of the first cars built in the UK at Burniston.

The critics said that it didn’t match the peerless build quality and reliability of the Japanese model but I’m sure there was little to complain about.

One of the toughest cars ever made, I favour it over the later Avensis both to drive and as a cheapo runner but it is very old now so rust will be well into most so get under it for a good look. Well worth preserving a good example but when shopping on a tight budget don’t limit yourself to just one make or madel. I've seen these with half a million miles up and still running sweetly. The pick was the lean burn 1.6 petrol in my opinion, it was nippy yet would exceed 50mpg easy enough and would run forever if looked after.
