Hi guys, I have one door on a VW estate which just won’t lock.
It’s the rear passenger side.
It’s RCL, any ideas?

Very likely to be the doorlock/actuator .Very common fail on these. Unusually ,to gain access requires removal of the outer door skin ,which is bolted on.

Thank you. Can it be easily fixed or disabled so I can use the car until I get to a garage?

No easy fix, i'm afraid. But you might try operating the interior lock switch with the engine running. sometimes this gives the voltage a boost to make the lock work.

Expensive?? Several hours Labour??
Thank you for your help so far

depends what you call expensive. Latch from VW is around £150 plus labour around 1-1.5 hours.

Thank you. I hope my local car electrics place can help.

There’s no way I can quickly disable the handle though is there?

No. Afraid not.

Covered under another thread, but I have the same issue on my son's Astra K. Checked price for the latch at main dealer - £61. There can't be much difference in what you get for your money. Second hand on eBay start at around £25 and go up to more than the price of the new one!

I had similar problem with Pug 207 rear door - would not latch. Cured by local indie who found a used replacement lock (£30) and replaced it for a similar cost. All OK since.

All I had to do was make a jury-rig to keep door closed during transit to his workshop.

This worked. Thank you. Lifesaver!

Hi all…
I got this from a local electric garage..
“The vehicle requires stripping to check but it is a common fault on the VW, the lock is a dealer part £178.68 + vat, Labour cost is usually around £100.00 + vat, if you would like to book your vehicle in, please contact me.”

Expensive but they are good.

I can’t find any parts for that price online.

Any ideas what it is? (For obvious reasons!)

The price of £178 is the cost of the door lock actuator supplied as a genuine part from VW. The parts on the internet are non genuine product and are around £25 . Do you feel lucky ? You could take a chance on a pattern part, it’s wether the garage are willing to fit it .

They may be a used example from a dismantler, as mine was. No ?

Do you have a link to the exact part please so I can look through the salvage websites?

If I were paying a garage £100 labour, I wouldn't chance a second hand part. They won't guarantee the job and I'd expect them to charge you again if it doesn't work.

You would also need the exact part number fitted as there may be more than one type available. For my son's Astra even the main dealer couldn't say as there's two possibilities depending on vehicle security fitted.

If I were DIY'ing, I'd be happy to chance second hand or pattern, especially considering the price difference.

Just in case this one comes up again…
There is a way to lock the door without replacing the module..
It’s a lot easier than you think!
