Toyota Aygo 2014 1.0L - High Fuel consumption after service - ah207

Apologies of this topic has been discussed before. yesterday had my 2014 Toyota Aygo (1.0L) serviced at a local garage where I work. The service included replacement of front brake discs and pads, 3 spark plugs, air & pollen filters, oil filter and oil. My commute to work is 20 miles. Normally, from Monday to Friday, with a full tank, I use up 3 bars worth of fuel. After the service yesterday however, I used up 2 bars on the way home - and another 2 bars on the way in to work this morning! There's no smell of petrol and the car drives smoothly. My first reaction is to take it straight back to the garage. But just wanted to check here in case anyone has experienced anything like this before - or if I'm overlooking something. Thank you

Could ask them to check brake operation as you had new disks and pads, possible brakes are binding, i doubt anything else would cause it ?

An easy check you can do yourself is to see if the front wheels feel warm, compared to the back at the end of your journey. If they do, it's probably a brake binding.

If the above tips don't work, do a brim to brim check.

Next time you fill up, stop when the pump clicks, note mileage, then when down to about a quarter do a fill up, get miles between filling up and use fuel calculator for MPG.

Thank you everyone for your input. I've checked tyre pressures earlier today - all good. On the way home this evening I'll top up with petrol (brim to brim test) - and see how I get on. After the drive home, I'll check the tyres for temperature - in case the new brake discs/pads are causing excessive friction. Maybe good I didn't just burst into the garage today to complain - better to go armed with more data! I'll also keep my ears peeled for any unusual sound coming from the front. Will report back.

I very much doubt if there is anything wrong with the car . If the brakes were binding that badly , there would be smoke pouring off the wheels and the car would struggle to move forward . I think there is a miscalculation of fuel being used , coupled with the fact that petrol has increased in price quite considerably.

I agree and as petrol is up around my way 15p a litre, could be the problem, plus its getting colder so more fuel is used travelling around. OP not the first to mention lower than normal mpg, neighbours mentioned it yesterday its costing more to get around...

I also understand E10 has a lower calorific value then E5. I certainly appear to be getting better economy since I determined to use E5, but I don't have accurate figures yet.

It could be that I think I must be as I'm paying so much more for it! Is there a psychological phrase for that?

UPDATE: I filled up the tank with petrol (until nozzle clicked off) just before heading home. It equated to just 16.4L - which immediately told me that the 2 bars indicated by the fuel gauge must be wrong. When I turned the car on, it displayed the full number of bars. No bars were lost on the journey home (20 miles) and none on the journey in this morning (I normally lose one bar every 2 days). The front tyres were not hot - in fact, I could even touch the brake discs - they were slightly warm but nothing more. No smell of burning rubber or hot metal. So I'm not sure why I panicked yesterday - probably observed an anomaly as a result of the colder temperature and because of the service the day before - I just got it into my head that something must be wrong. Apologies all round - false alarm. Sorry about that.

It would be interesting to know if you keep a check on fuel economy, if you notice a difference in mpg using E10, speaking to people i know reckon they are down 6 to 8 mpg one is a taxi driver who does a lot of miles

They do say it shouldn't make a difference but still early days to find out for most drivers ....
