Hi all; advice and views would be much appreciated...

This weekend the nearside steering rod on my brand new Evoque (MY21 / 2k miles) suddenly snapped without warning.

I obviously lost control of the car, ground suddenly to a halt, luckily didn't hit anyone (or was hit by anyone) and equally luckily wasn't driving very quickly. The family were all a bit shaken up though.

The mechanic who recovered the car said he'd not seen anything like this, but I'm keen to get some wider views on how serious this really is, and how unusual.

What do you think? Have I just had a near death experience in a dangerously sub-standard car - or just been unlucky with a mechanical fault that's fairly common...?

I would think that something as serious as this would warrant an inquiry by the manufacturer.

In any case I would be rejecting this car.

Yes.

UNLESS its been seriously abused off-road, which I suppose is potentially the case with this type of car.

OTOH they are supposedly built to take that kind of abuse up to a point, which makes this failure all the more extraordinary, especially if it has not in fact been abused.

I'd say this needs escalated as a matter of some urgency, since it has potentially lethal consequences and there may be more flawed components out there.

Potentially a major recall.

Known problem - aluminium bolts used - should be steel.

Recalls in US Canada

Google Evoque steering rack and read all about it

Fix on fail UK, no recall

What was the purpose of using Al bolts ? Can't have been weight saving ? Special design fault ? Enhanced electrochemical corrosion ?

That'll be fear of those litigious American's suing their horse-donkey hybrid, I suppose.

In the UK they can get away with it.

"UNLESS its been seriously abused off-road, which I suppose is potentially the case with this type of car."

You mean bumped up and down too many kerbs outside the school?

If I had any faith in the car prior to the failure, that faith would now have evaporated.

I don't think this is the steering rack bolt issue, the OP's car is too new and after the build date when the bolts were changed. I have looked on the Evoque forum as I quite fancy one of these Evoques as a PHEV and found this:

Someone asks what years are affected by this problem and they are given the answer:

"Up to MY 17 VIN number HH180415. So if you VIN number ends with HH then a number 180416 or higher you are "safe" as this is the car which got the first rack with the new bolts.
Any number lower than that or letters earlier than HH will have the aluminium bolts.

You could report it to the DVSA as it is safety relevant:

Thanks all for the replies (and yes, correct, not been thrashed off-road - ha!) The issue has been escalated by JLT to global engineering team, I'll report back to let you know what they say....

I would think the snapped arm is a result of it becoming detached from the rack , possibly due to it not being tightened correctly from new . I guess it’s a similar steering system as a Focus or Kuga , and I’ve not heard of any issues here .

As stated above I would report it to DVSA as it is a safety issue, JLR/manufacturers in general will only carry out a recall if forced to as their primary aim is profit...

So, Nothing has changed with JLR and they are trading on image.

I pity anyone who has one of these cars outside warranty,

Sure some will have few faults, but any fault is going to mean lots of expense..

Totally agree ORB, it beggars belief that someone thought it a good idea to use aluminium bolts on such a safety critical component.

"t beggars belief that someone thought it a good idea to use aluminium bolts on such a safety critical component."

Totally agree. However, the rack is made by ZF so they will hopefully know why they chose that material.

I found this interesting thread about the bolts, it seems Tesla used the same rack and had the same problem but they recalled the cars. That's the issue, no recall for affected Evoques.

However, as I said above the OP's problem must be something else as his car is too new. Something not tightened properly at the factory, not picked up at PDI etc.
