Hi all,

Weird sequence of events today.. got in my car like normal, remote key worked fine.. drove to gym and parked up for 90mins.

Come back to my car, the fob doesn't work. So i pop the outside of the handle off, use the key in the door, alarm goes off (not sure this should happen), get in, turn the ignition on and it says replace battery in key, and I drive home.

I replace the battery in my key with a new one.. it doesn't work (no light on the fob when pushing a button).

I replace the battery in my key with one from my wifes car (battery definitely has charge), it still doesn't work.

So i give up on that key.. locate my spare, try it up in my bedroom and its working (at least the light comes up on the fob when i press a button). I go down to my car, press unlock.. nothing happens.

I try sync'ing my spare with my car outside it, press unlock, manually open the door (alarm goes off), turn the ignition on (car says replace battery in key). I then turn the car all off, get out, shut the door, and.... the key no longer works, no red light on fob when i press the button.

I try two different new batteries in both my keys, original and spare.. and now neither of them even give a red light on the fob when i press a button.. its like the car has killed the keys.

any ideas for home remedies? appreciate any advice

Firstly, you can only turn off alarm with the remote , so using the key in the door to unlock will not do this until you put the key in ignition. I would buy some genuine Duracell batteries and start again . Are you sure that the safety stickers have been removed from the batteries that you have fitted ?

Were your hands clean when handling the batteries. Could be worthwhile cleaning the batteries and connections with electrical cleaner. Meths will do.

The lack of red light on the key fob indicates it's an issue within the fob itself - eg battery etc. I'd get some brand new ones as they are known to decay eventually on the shelf/in drawer - also triple check polarity.

Solved this when it happened to me. I had one key with no lights and non responsive, so to test the battery I took it from the working key. Then both keys stopped working with no lights or response at all! I then took the Battery from the Mercedes fob it’s a 2032, while it won’t close in the VW fob cover it did make the fob work and doors open close, so I put back in normal VW 2025 battery after and the fob is now working. I did the same for the other fob and it worked as well. It’s as if the 2032 battery gave the fob a new boost of life.

Very odd and probably not recommended but it worked so maybe will help others.
