FORD TRANSIT CONNECT Edit 1753 DIESEL 08/2006 -> 1 - 2008 Diesel Transit Connect - Max123

Hi lads... need some help on this one.

Original Symptom:

1) Vehicle would not crank

Investigation:

1) Battery Good at 12.6 Volts

2) 12V available at starter motor and solenoid

3) Powertrain Control Module wakes up - no DTCs

4) PATS - Indicates normal

5) Glow Plug Fuse Blown - Ignored for now

6) All expected relays operational

Attempt 1

Action: Applied 12V straight to starter motor solenoid while turning key

Result: Starter actuator dead

Action: Removed Starter Motor, cleaned up terminals, applied 12V to motor and solenoid

Result: 12V direct to starter solenoid and motor

Action: Obtain replacement starter motor - apply 12V to motor and solenoid

Result: Actuator function and motor works

Action: Fit new starter motor, clean terminals, check wiring, check continuity throughout from ignition switch, through fuses, through relays, checked grounds - all clean.

Did find that ignition Switch was providing intermittent function when in position 3

Attempt 2:

Action: New ignition switch, check continuity, 12V supply, grounds, fuses - all good

Results: Rock solid supply of 12V when in position 3, PCM awake, PATS is normal still no crank from position 3 key turn.

Action: Feed 12V to starter directly when turning key will crank engine but no start.

Any ideas?

Does the pats light flash during attempt to start ? Is this a di engine or common rail ?

Hi - thanks for replying. I did not look at PATS light during start - the rest of the time it flashes around 1 per sec

Its the 1.8 TDCi Common Rail - the down tuned 90PS

What about the pats light?

PATS indication is normal - no DTCs also

I’m struggling to understand what’s going on here . What was the original fault ? Have you checked all fuses in the engine bay and behind the glove box . ?

Original Fault: No Crank

All fuses checked, all grounds and relays are good, PATS is fine, all circuit continuity is good, I have replaced the ignition switch, PCM wakes up and has no stored DTCs - still no crank.

Crank circuit is switched by a relay , controlled by the pcm . If it doesn’t start if you hot wire the starter, then it’s possible that the pcm or pats system is at fault . Have you checked for any water ingress at the pcm?
