Renault Clio RS line 20 reg - Autonomous Braking - golfauto11

Hello,

I Purchased the above vehicle with only 4000 miles on the clock, and it is supposed to have autonomous braking. It is switched on according to the very complicated multimedia screen, but there is no evidence that it is working. I have tried with great care approaching the car in front without braking myself, but at the last minute, I have had to brake myself. I have tried it with cruise control on and off, but still the car doesn't slow itself down!! Can anybody help??

The dealership doesn't seem to have a clue, by the way, and as far as I am aware, it isn't an optional extra. Thanks.

Have you read the manual carefully? I ask because my Golf has some autonomous functions that I also thought were not working but on reading the manual I found there are some parameters applied that restrict when it works. For example the autonomous braking in reverse is affected by when you last applied the brakes. I can't remember the logic but I think it assumes you are in control if you have already been applying the brakes during the manouvre whereas if you are reversing back without having braked at all the auto system stays active.
I might be wrong on the detail here but I think I right on the principles. You certainly know when it applies as its so abrupt you think you have hit something. When in fact it's just been a nearby bit of foliage off to the side!
Mine has never applied the brakes going forward but occasionally I get a dash warning in stop start traffic if it thinks there is a collision risk. The same warning flashes up at speed on one particular bit of road I use regularly. There is no apparent reason so I assume it's reacting to something at the roadside that the sensor is momentarily aligned with as the road bends.
Similarly to your case, in normal driving, it's hard to tell if the system is operating. The detail on your Clio will be different but I assume most of these systems work broadly in the same way.

Many thanks for your detailed reply!! I have read the book, and to be honest, it it ridiculously complicated, constantly saying "if my vehicle applies" to just about every single item in the book. My partner has a 7.5 Golf and what you write, is absolutely right, and I am sure the Renault system is very similar. I firmly believe that there is something wrong, and will just have to drive them mad, until this is sorted!! The warranty is very much still in existence. Many thanks, again!
