Mercedes-Benz E-Class Cabriolet - Mercedes auto box reliability - lucklesspedestrian

Hi

We've enjoyed our Mercedes CLK convertible for the last 2 and a bit years now and have been impressed by the reliability (it is a manual though)

We are thinking about upgrading to the car that basically replaced the CLK i.e. the E Class cabrio in either E200 or E250 petrol form. So we're looking at a car around 10 years old.

I quite fancy the auto box which would surely help with the weird foot operated parking brake arrangement on these cars but I was wondering if there were any major reliability issues with the 7G-Tronic box. It's obviously something major and expensive to potentially go wrong so any thoughts/experiences would be gratefuly received.

Cheers

Probably a question better targetted at the Merc owners forum.

Lots of owners and independent Merc specialist knowledge to tap into.

Pretty bullet proof. Rarely go wrong according to the Mercedes specialist I use.

I've had the 7G on a SLK350 for 7 years, no trouble at all. The car is 15 years old.

It’s a conventional torque converter transmission with no real vices, I wouldn’t fear it at all in fact It’s what I’d pick with any Mercedes. They don’t suit the clunky manual boxes. It’s parts prices and rip off dealers I’d be more concerned with but if you’ve a good local Mercedes specialist to rely on then a good condition full history petrol engined E class convertible can be a good car. Just remember that they’re not as robust as their reputation suggests. The gearbox itself shouldn’t cause any concern though.

The gearbox is not a problem. It’s the engine I’d be worried about . Modern Mercedes engines are not the most robust .

The engine (1.8 petrol) seems to be a variant of the M271/DE18 unit I've been running for the last couple of years in my CLK. It's been totally reliable, smooth and very economical, although I take your point, that could just be my good fortune.

Thanks for all the replies so far, really helpful as always.

Never had a gearbox problem with 5 Mercs, all autos. The foot operated handbrake is quirky but but with the auto box just put it in gear, release the brake and you are away. My list of Merc problems, C class had a control box problem which was a grand. 2nd C class good as gold, Clk cabriolet had the roof stop working....sharp intake of breath at Merc dealers...over a grand, local indie found the offending sensor deep in the depths and fixed it fo £100. SLK roof warped in the sun, Merc wanted 2k plus but I put it in for for an E class cabriolet. I am having an issue with a broken door lever which is silly money...you need the whole door card but hopefully the indie will sort it next week. Check that the car dosen't roll forward at all when you apply the foot/handbrake.

When we got the CLK we found an indy in Glasgow (not too far away) with a good reputation who managed to sort out an engine thermostat issue quickly and cheaply and we also have a good wee local garage a few hundered yards down the street that we've used for most cars for about the last 20 years and have a good relationship with.

Interesting to hear your SLK roof warped in the sun, with our CLK it's the top of the drivers side door card which has lifted and warped.
