Hi All,

I am currently looking for a second hand car. I am currently looking at a Ford Fiesta (2009), Petrol 1.4, 96CV and a Mazda 2 (2008), Petrol 1.5, 103CV.

I need a reliable, small car to drive to and from work daily. Once a year I'd like to be able to drive across France and Spain if possible. I'd like something that is reliable and can overtake without issues on the motorway.

What would you recommend between these two cars? Pro and cons? Anything to avoid?

No particular issues with either other than age (rust, accident damage and neglect). For that reason, unless you live in a densely populated area rich with used cars, might not be a good idea to limit your choices to two cars. At this age and price (presumably low), condition is the most important consideration.

Add the Toyota Yaris 1.3/1.33 and the Suzuki Swift 1.3/1.5. But quite a number of other cars could be worth buying if they have been looked after better than a neglected Fiesta or Mazda 2.

Thank you for the reply. Yes, I have my eye on a few others but am close to buying. The fiests is around the 65,000km mark and the Mazda much higher at 113,000km.

I'm based in Spain and second hand cars don't come half as cheap as they do in the UK so I just want to avoid any horror stories or bad models if possible.

Both are good models, buy the one which is in the best condition and which has the best history. Though the lower mileage of the Fiesta would if genuine swing me towards it assuming both are in equally good condition.

Well I guess for most of Spain, rust shouldn't be an issue!.

Maybe consider a Seat Ibiza too, presumably quite common in Spain?.
