Toyota Avensis Tourer - Erratic revving - JonestHon

Hi,

Our trusty 2010 Avensis 1.8 Petrol manual never gave us a spot of bother from new, now on 130k it developed something that I will need help with.

There are two things I noticed maybe related maybe not.

1. When starting the engine in the morning you get a screechy noise at the tail-end of the usual starter noise, almost like the starter is still engaged while the engine is already live, like a very high pitch sound lasting a fraction of a second.

2. When driving from cold the revving is erratic for the first 20 miles, going up when stopping to about 2k (which is normal) but keeps at 2k to 2.3k rpm when driving slowly at 20 to 30 mph. If I coast slowly by moving to neutral it goes almost to 2.5k and will go down to normal 2k when I push into 2nd or 1st gear.

When warm the car is fine and idle at 1.1k rpm.

SWAMBO is not impressed and saying that over revving can lead to unwanted acceleration which I think is a good point.

The car was always serviced by main dealer but the dealer was moved away during lockdown and now is so far I am considering using a local garage, will that be a wise move with such issue as above?

Looking at the erratic revving, I would suspect the throttle position sensor (TPS) needs adjustment, as an 1100rpm idle when warm seems too high, I would expect a normal hot idle speed to be around 800 to 900rpm. The TPS is on the throttle body itself.

I would think this has electronic throttle control , so the position sensor is incorporated into the electronic throttle body . Doubt if there is any adjustment. I would check that the throttle plate and Venturi are clean . Also monitor coolant temp through live data to ensure that the value is within spec . Maybe try a battery reset. Disconnect for 5 mins . Starter noise is likely to be a worn/dry armature bush/ bearing.

Correct on starter motor.

I believe this is a Valvematic engine and throttle plate is only there as an emergency backup. In normal running it stays open. I would check: A. Coolant temp sensor. B. Clean MAF. C. See if any fault codes present for the Valvematic system

Took the car to our local garage and they tested few things.

Sods law the car behaved perfectly while there.

They tested the coolant sensor plus connected the car to a scanner.

No codes appeared. I asked about the starter but they don't have anyone who service this motor. They quoted £120 to replace it but I said I will try and see if I can find someone who do starters servicing.
