Wife's Fiat 500, couple of years old. She said the speedo was showing very low, then 100+ when she was doing 50mph.

Local garage couldn't find why, said take it to main dealer, it's under warranty.

I took it out and it's working fine. Used speedo app to confirm speeds.

Are there any known issues? Do we need to register the fault with the dealer so if it happens again out of warranty, it'll get fixed ?

"Do we need to register the fault with the dealer so if it happens again out of warranty, it'll get fixed ?"

I would - it can do no harm. I would be tempted to email though asking them to reply to confirm they've logged it on the computer. Then you've got a record.

The garage will no doubt wish to investigate before registering a fault. We could all make a simple phone call to prolong the warranty on many items if this dodge worked.

Since you have removed it yourself etc there will no doubt be evidence of tampering thus I suspect you will not get any warranty repair work done and will probably be charged for the time taken to dismantle the dash.

But why on earth did you initially take to car to the local garage and then tamper with it yourself despite being told by the local garage to take it for a warranty repair.

Its what warranties are for.

I think the OP's statement means he took the car out to see if the speedo malfunctioned, rather than he took the speedo out?

I think he means he took the car out for a drive...

Its a Fiat so probably a bad connection or failing sensor. If taken to a dealer they might charge a 'diagnosis' fee if under warranty and no obvious fault is visible.

Fiat 500 models are known for dash pod/display issues . Can’t say I’ve seen one with speed inaccuracies. Don’t think it will be a sensor fault , the signal is sourced from the abs module . Connector to the pod is usually very secure .

Could it be a faulty ABS sensor? On Peugeots when they fail the sensor shows the vehicle doing crazy speeds even when stood still.

The dealer will not register a fault just because you ask them too. You need to book it in for them to look at it but remember when the warranty has expired the car is out of warranty.

Any claim out of the warranty is called a goodwill claim and will be looked at then on its own merit. I worked for many years in a dealer and was involved with warranty claims and the systems know how old the car is and will not let you make a warranty claim it may seem harsh but that is how it is.

.... remember when the warranty has expired the car is out of warranty ...

A most enlightening statement - who will it help ?

I suspect that the poster was pointing out to the OP that their intention of

register the fault with the dealer so if it happens again out of warranty, it'll get fixed ?

would be a pointless exercise.
