Hi,

I have a 66 Peugeot 108 which has done 14,000 miles. Recently the engine light keeps coming on for a day or two and then disappearing, normally coming back on a few days later.

Is this something to be concerned about and is a trip to the garage necessary?

Thanks!

The engine fault light is there for a reason . The engine electrical system has detected a problem with the system . It may be nothing serious, but it certainly needs investigation.

Very low mileage. When did the car last have a decent high speed run. Intermittent engine light can often be due to sensors in the exhaust/catalyst. Try giving it a good run before you pay someone to look.

Is it a bullet proof 1 litre Toyota power unit OR the problematic PSA 1.2 Puretech?

You need to get the codes read initially then procede from there.

This is a very relevant question. Whilst the codes are just a starting point to get you started in the right direction some help more than others..

This is just an example. I have no idea what your problem may be.

Quite a few of these cars have had premature oxygen sensor failure. The dash may display an abs / tyre pressure warning (this could lead you to look in the direction of an abs sensor etc without reading the codes). Reading the codes will show P0139 O2 sensor circuit slow response bank1 sensor 2 this would tell me to have a look at the wiring on the post cat oxygen sensor and change the sensor.

I wonder if this is caused by the sensor being very exposed and a lot of our roads flooded?

Hi, is it a known fault about the downstream oxygen sensor, it’s just I’ve paid to have 1 replaced today on my 2016 108 when I had it replaced the first time in 2018.

Could you tell me what causes this to fail? Thanks :)

I don't know but the post cat sensor is very exposed and must get constantly splashed with water. I guess splashing a hot sensor with cold puddle / flood water can't help.

Engine fault codes essentially fall into two categories.

1. Electrical circuit faults. This is where a component or wiring is open or short circuit. The ECM is therefore unable to receive data from it.

2. Mechanical faults that are having a direct effect on engine emissions. These are more difficult to identify. The ECM will set a fault code or codes based on where the fault is being reported from. Please note this DOES NOT necessarily mean that a sensor or switch is faulty. The ECM cannot differentiate from a sensor being faulty (unless it is open or short circuit) from a sensor giving a wrong reading due to a mechanical fault.

The ECM (Engine Control Module) is a programmed computer. It cannot think, apply logic or reason. It does EXACTLY what it is told, nothing more and nothing less. It will only see something as a fault if it's receiving data outside of what it programmed to receive. So even if you can detect a fault with your car doesn't mean necessarily that the ECM can. This is where people commonly go wrong. No fault codes doesn't necessarily mean no faults, or vice-versa.
