SI 2021/396 - The Automated and Electric Vehicles Act 2018 (Commencement No. 1) Regulations 2021

These Regulations bring into force on provisions of the Automated and Electric Vehicles Act 2018 (c. 18) (“the Act”). These are the first commencement regulations made under the Act.

Google the act and note Sections 1 to 8 re Insurance which will be brought into force on 21.4.21

I only scanned it quickly but Section 2 caught my attention as it said something along the lines that if an uninsured automated vehicle is involved in an accident, the owner is liable. Is that not a change from the current position where a fund pays out in the event of there being no insurance?

So, you have your self-driving car SORN'd (uninsured) and park it on your front drive. Some bar steward nicks it and lets it drive itself away with him inside. It is involved in a collision. You pay for any damage it causes. Sounds as if it has been well thought out.

As far as I can recall, if the car was an "ordinary" vehicle under the above scenario he MIB would be the last resort for victims in the incident. Why should a self-driving car be different?
