Smooth and quiet estate or 4x4 for under £6500 - lrochfort

Hello all,

Noisy and rough riding cars trigger my migraines. In particular the low frequency noise and vibration from diesels and their exhausts at idle, and the rough ride and virbation/noise caused by stiff suspension and low profile tyres.

Not all diesels are an issue, so long as they're insulated from the cabin.

Could people please recommend quiet and smooth estates or 4x4 for under £6500?

I'm considering:

Volvo v70, xc70, xc90

Mercedes E Class

Citroen C5

Land rover discovery 3

Any other suggestions?

Japanese import Ford Explorer? Super soft. Super refined, but thirsty. And slightly over budget. Body on frame does give better refinement in my opinion, less road noise on the average car.

That's awesome, but yes too expensive alas. Probably a nightmare to get parts for, too!

With a budget of £6500 it would be brave to buy any one of the above.

Parts bills never mind Labour charges could be eye watering

I would lower my brand name list and look for a solid petrol Mazda/Honda/Toyota - don't get me wrong Japanese car parts are pricey but you are less likely to need repairs on one - Land Rover/Citroen, MB and electrical gremlins abound as they age.

2017 /18 two of my sons bought & sold brand new Discoveries (1 x petrol, 1 x diesel) within 2 years due to the inability to get the dealer to get the cars fixed, waits for parts and then the next thing would pop up it's head ................

It is something in the back of my head.

My only concern with the Honda is the ride quality. My parents have an 07 Accord estate that is very stiff with lots of road noise, similarly me ex-wife with her CRV.

Which Mazda and Toyota would you recommend?

Taking inspiration from another current thread, I think you'd have to go some to find a better option than the humble Mondeo for comfort and refinement.

Not sure which engine option would be best for your usage, though obviously diesel is by far the most common. Similarly the gearbox, as the auto would be a Powershift. Not sure if, like VAG the twin clutch automated manual on bigger/more powerful cars the different and (supposedly) more durable wet clutch type (rather than dry clutch in the smaller cars). If in doubt, see out a manual.

I know you are looking for estate or SUV, but the boot in the Mondeo hatch is huge, so unless you actually need the extra height in the boot, the hatch would probably suffice.

For minimal NVH you need something big with a six cylinder engine, thick carpets and suspension tuned for comfort rather than sport. An estate is likely to give a smoother ride than a 4 x 4 boxy SUV. At this price the make is immaterial - past history far more important as you'll only be able to afford an old one. Old BMW 5 series come to mind but they seem to ask astonishingly high prices for twelve year old high milers.

SUVs are more likely to have long-travel soft suspension and high profile tyres than a conventional estate with lower profile tyres.

With that thought in mind why not look at the Skoda Octavia hatch it has a boot to beat most cars. I have driven 4 Octavias of the era you are looking at, 3 estates and one hatch and whilst the estates were terribly boomy to the point of offending the wifes ears the hatch was fine.

A post 2013 1.4 TSi 140 PS with the belt drive cam engine would be my choice (great performance, economy and refinement with no DPF worries) but diesels are available.

The Superb is a better car but you would not get a Mk3 for the money you have to spend and the Mk2 ones are a bit odd (twin hatch back end is very heavy) and I don't think they came with the belt drive 140 PS TSi, Still worth a look if its diesel you desire.

The Mk 2 Superb Estate rides well and the 2.0 diesel is fine.

The C5 mentioned is not a bad shout and rides very well (even the non hydropneumatic ones) but you probably don't need to spend £6k on one. Also look at its sister 508.

I would have thought £6k would also get you a half decent V70 which is a very comfortable car and has great seats.

The V70 actually shares a lot with the Mk 4 Mondeo and labour times are almost identical.

Smooth and quiet estate or 4x4 for under £6500 - Big John

I have a 2014 Superb 1.4 mkii poverty spec that is very smooth riding (probably because of 205/55 r16 tyres) and has a very quiet engine. It's about silent at tick over and very quiet on the move with little wind noise. Mine is the hatch/boot version but and estate version is available and a very late good one would fit your budget (latest 2015)

Volvo V70 would be on my shortlist for your remit as well.
