Avensis 2003 - Tailgate struts - joegrundy

Brother has an 03 avensis. The bottom of the tailgate has started to catch on/scrape the bumper when opening and closing. He thinks its because the struts are worn, but I'm not so sure - I think it might be because the hinges have loosened/dropped. I can't see how weak sruts would affect closing position. Any thoughts, please? (Also, I think hinges use torx/star bolts - is this correct?)

Thanks very much.

Neither can I . If anything, struts would tend to lift the tailgate ? Has the bumper been distorted by a minor bump ?

Check the tailgate hinge pins its possible they are worn causing tailgate to drop, not sure of bolt head type but iirc bolts fixed on one end..

If the hinge bolts have loosened, the fix should be obvious, if you can get to them with the right spanner. If the pins have worn, probably the hinges have too.

Thanks for the comments.

I had misunderstood the problem. The tailgate was catching at the top, not the bottom.

Struts changed and problem resolved.

PS: I was pleasantly surprised at how much difference a £12 pair of replacement struts made to the car. In the few years he's had it the struts have obviously been weak (and the tailgate is surprisingly heavy) leading to his SWMBO having difficulty using it.

Now, once it's open by 6-12" the struts raise it effortlessly and allow for damped controlled closing - and holding it open while putting stuff in.

The new struts came without mounting brackets as some apparently do, but it was an easy job - even for your ham-fisted correspondent whose skills were learnt (and finished learning) on a MM1000.*

The old struts were R and L handed - the new ones had swivelling ends so would fit either side (just as well, I'm sure I would have failed to notice until it was too late). They have spring clips to fit on to the ball joint mounting and it is theoretically possible to partially pull out the spring clips for removal/refitting. My history with spring clips is not encouraging - they often end up much further away than you would have thought it possible they could have 'boinged' and even once found are deformed beyond re-use.

The struts were easy to pull off with gentle use of the the claw end of a hammer and easy to fit with a tap of the business end of same hammer.

*No job is without its complications, of course,in the chuckle Brothers diy world, and I highly recommend that you brace the tailgate up with timber or similar while doing this job. We didn't, and when I found out how to pull off the top mounting I unexpectedly realised how heavy the tailgate was when it fell on me but - worse - trapped the top half of the strut agains the pillar, causing a dent. So, as always, one job leads to another ...

PPS: Lesson re-learned during this job: have a look at it, put your reading glasses on if necessary, think about what you're going to do, step back and roll a cigarette, smoke it in quiet contemplation BEFORE you start picking up hammer or spanner or (God forbid) power tools.

If the struts were unable to support the open tailgate, that would have been all you needed to know. I have changed a few struts - admittedly on smallish cars - and it's quite simple while the tailgate is supported.

Way, way back I tried to sort a problem with the tailgate on a Morris 1100 estate. BL didn't use struts but torsion-bars across the hinges, acting on an idler wheel at the end - which on my car was misaligned. I made a special tool from 2 feet of heavy steel piping to apply force to the torsion bar. Still have it, I use it as a tommy-bar to loosen wheel nuts which have been tightened by gorillas.

You're right, of course. I'll know should there be a next time (a decreasing chance). I'm reminded of the old saying (can't remember who said it, so can't attribute it) 'Too soon we get old, too late we get smart'.

Not long changed my tailgate struts on Civic and surprising what a difference they make, I didnt think the tailgate pins were worn being a Toyota but some cars have that problem and harder to sort as you need 2 people on most, now you know its easier to spot the problem...
