Renault kadjar - Garage mechanic tampering with dashcam - SMILEYSMILE

My thread is here somewhere ref turbo failure.

My question is about dashcams running whilst garage mechanic working on your car. When Renault dealer returned my car I found out a day later my front dashcam was playing up so took car to place where I had it fitted.

It corrected itself after rebooting it. When I got home I looked at footage over the time Renault garage had car. The day they inspected car you can see dashcam wobbling so it was being tampered with by mechanic.

The day car went for a test drive after refitting turbo he parked in a car park off his route and tampered with it again causing the KM (speed) to stop recording it and whatever he did the picture wasn't clear. You could just see pin holes of the road ahead.

He drove back to garage and parked inside. An hour between videos so he must have temporarily disconnected battery and camera returned to normal.

Knowing all this what advice would you give? I've a good mind to report this to his manager.

This is no cheap camera. Front and rear were installed with a separate battery pack.

He's probably been down the pub, taken the family to the supermarket, hooned around the streets and stolen some fuel to make it seem like its not been used. Expect a letter from plod shortly.

On a serious point it's reasonable for not wanting to be on cam but it's not if you're tampering with a camera in a customers car right?

At one car service, the last thing on my dashcam was a voice saying "who left this thing plugged in"? I did wonder what they didn't want recording.

Some workshops REQUIRE dashcams to be removed or disabled before being brought in - one can only wonder what they have to hide.

Bath tub-

I have mechanic swearing and singing as music is playing in garage.

He's then outside having a puff on his vapor thingy.

I'd not have checked dashcam if it had not been tampered with as it wasn't working correctly when I got car back.

If I was working in a garage I would throw a cover over any webcam I saw. They are a creeping invasion of privacy!

PS I hope smileyman complains to the Renault garage and gets shown the door. How ungrateful can one get

????

It's not a webcam.

If he half a brain he'd put a rag between the lens and window.

Not tamper with it. It's nothing to do with the engine.

Besides keeping an eye on dodgy mechanics isn't a bad thing.

Even I wouldn't suggest that. If you have nothing to hide what is there to be afraid of?

Thanks Skid.

The more I think about it the more the mechanic was out of order. By all means place a clean rag between the lens and windscreen but don't tamper with camera. I'm pretty sure if I took this further this mechanic could be seriously in trouble. The cctv is there to protect the car not to spy on anybody.

Disconnect the battery if you want it off. Which they did at some point to repair the car.

My Kia Sportage was serviced on the 3rd of march, and when I got it back, the dashcam power supply had been removed.

I was waiting while the car was serviced (or should I say inspected)

No problem with that.

Dashcams should always be turned off IMO when putting a car into a garage. If you are not registered with the ICO it could also get you in trouble if any data ended up in the wrong place.

I don't think many people here would think it ok for a random person to place a camera and a microphone in their office or place of work which they had no idea who controlled the data and where it would end up.

Garages shouldn't touch it but it should be very firmly off and if it's not then its not unreasonable for them to turn it off IMO.

My experience of the ICO means they'd be dealing with a dead man.

If you want to do that register with the ICO, put a proper written policy in place, make sure you have a proper GDPR policy and get anyone to sign a disclaimer. It's what everyone else has to do if they want to do this sort of stuff.

Well the camera is working now but if they had broken it then I'd have taken it further.

The car is in for a service and MOT end of March so I'll put a note on seat that cctv is hardwired. So please don't tamper with cctv just place a clean rag between lens and windscreen.

I don't buy into BS about cctv in there workplace and its violating there privacy. The cctv is there for a purpose. If a mechanic takes it out for a test drive then I would expect him to treat my car with respect. Its not following him around his work place its protecting my car. You can only disconnect it by disconnecting car battery.

Must confess I am not a fan of dahscams full stop. Neve felt the need for one much.

I just know I don't think it reasonable for a customer/client to place a camera in my office so I don't feel it is reasonable for me to place one in someone else's workplace. I get you can cover the lens - I assume they don't do sound?

The difference with CCTV in a workplace is that it is workplace CCTV. It is not someone else's CCTV.

I'd guess most garages must be used to dealing with it by now.

My local Toyota dealer (a branch of AC) do state that dashcams will be switched off during servicing/workshop visits. However, last time rather than just simply pressing the "power" button they had physically disconnected/dismounted it (badly).

If the bonnet was up you wouldn't be able to see anything of them working anyway just what they did on the test drive at the end.

Fortunately for anyone working it's not BS, there are real regulatory issues with surveillance cameras which is what a dashcam becomes in a workshop. If the camera is on then, whatever the intention it's filming and probably recording audio. If somebody turned up at my work wanting to record their interaction with my employer there'd be all kinds of issues. As well as my own rights to go about my work there's confidentiality for other users of the service to think about.
