The drivers wiper on my Corolla judders badly even after fitting new Bosch blades.

i have heard that it’s possible to bend the arm to stop this happening but I’m not sure how to go about it.

Toyota Corolla Verso - Wiper juddering - Andrew-T

You're sure it's nothing to do with the surface of the screen ? Tried giving it a thorough clean ?

Toyota Corolla Verso - Wiper juddering - Galaxy

Clean your screen with T-Cut and then apply Rain - X.

I agree it is probably the screen. I would avoid rain x as it is a nightmare to remove. I would actually just put the car through a machine car wash on the most expensive setting and see if that cures it.
Toyota Corolla Verso - Wiper juddering - Steveieb
Thanks for the replies but I have tried cleaning the screen three times with no improvement. The passenger side blade is fine but it's a lot smaller.
The blade is set at an angle where I assume it scrapes against the screen rather than be dragged.
Has anyone heard of tweaking the angle of the arm ?
Toyota Corolla Verso - Wiper juddering - yokel38

You need to fit Genuine blades, they're about £20 a pair.

I don't think bending the arm is advisable unless you have reason to suspect it has been damaged. The correct blades will be the correct shape. As has been implied, you may have got counterfeit replacements ?

Toyota Corolla Verso - Wiper juddering - Steveieb

Interesting point .
I did get them off eBay !

Have you heard of this going on? They looked genuine from the packet !

Toyota Corolla Verso - Wiper juddering - madf

Did you clean the blade?

I use diluted vinegar on blade and screen...to remove any gunged up dirt.

Toyota Corolla Verso - Wiper juddering - Steveieb

Yes cleaned everything as you say.

The mechanism has some play below in the mechanism cause by allowing the blade to hit the surround at some time. Impossible to get at to tighten up as it’s all under the scuttle and out of sight.

I too have obtained Bosch blades for my Pug 207 from E-bay. IIRC they can skitter a bit until they adapt to the screen, which may vary with drizzle, light or heavy rain. No probs once they have bedded in. I may have avoided the very cheapest blades, preferring mid-price ones.

Toyota Corolla Verso - Wiper juddering - yokel38

Yes, I see this issue virtually every week!

Toyota Corolla Verso - Wiper juddering - Steveieb

So have you any advice Yoke ?

Toyota Corolla Verso - Wiper juddering - yokel38

yes, pop down your nearest Toyota dealer and get a pair, they're much better than Bosch etc, and not expensive.

Steve - if you accept this advice I would like to hear how it turns out. Wiper blades are not very advanced technology, and unless they incorporate a magic frictionless ingredient I doubt there is a great difference between them :-) The spring pressure from the arms is another parameter, of which the blades are independent.

Toyota Corolla Verso - Wiper juddering - blindspot

i would take the wipers off and refit. in case you didn't get a click first time

Toyota Corolla Verso - Wiper juddering - Steveieb

Thanks for all your suggestions.

On closer inspection it looks like there has been some damage to the wiper arm support post.

When I lift the arm there is a click and the arm moves in the direction of the free play.

The previous owner allowed the blade to hit the screen side which over time caused the damage.

when I got the car i repositioned the arm but the damage must have been done.

The arm is firmly secured on the spline but the whole support has play in it .

Because of the age of the car I’m reluctant to dismantle

Last year I replaced the complete wiper mechanism on my 1994 Pug 306 without difficulty, so I don't think it's a job to run away from. Unless a Toyota is put together in a completely different way ....

Toyota Corolla Verso - Wiper juddering - Steveieb

Thanks Andrew but the whole support spindle moves laterally when the arm is retracted onto the screen, signifying excessive wear.

Apart from replacing the whole mechanism is there anything else I can do?

ive had another go at cleaning the screen and blade.

Toyota Corolla Verso - Wiper juddering - Galaxy

Have you tried coating the screen with Rain-X as I previously suggested?

Toyota Corolla Verso - Wiper juddering - Andrew-T

Maybe I should make clear that I fitted a second-hand wiper mechanism - not new, so cheap, about £25 IIRC - not because of wear, but a faulty motor which would not park properly. However the principle remains.

Toyota Corolla Verso - Wiper juddering - Metropolis.
Last ditch attempt I would try a set of genuine toyota wiper blades and a fresh bottle of screen wash. The genuine Toyota stuff is not usually that expensive, and the rubber compound might be different but either way will be top quality.

It could also just be new wiper syndrome, they often judder a bit till they lose their coating.
Toyota Corolla Verso - Wiper juddering - Steveieb

Many thanks for all your suggestions.

Reluctant to use any Rain X stuff as I had a bad experience with the anti mist.

So is it possible to buy genuine blades on eBay or would a flat blade modern type blade be worth a try?

Can you suggest any blades on eBay or Amazon that may be worth a try ?

Toyota Corolla Verso - Wiper juddering - Metropolis.
I would just call up the local main dealer. Even lexus wiper blades are not expensive.
Toyota Corolla Verso - Wiper juddering - Steveieb

Will do many thanks

Toyota Corolla Verso - Wiper juddering - Metropolis.
To be honest Toyota and Lexus dealers are the only main dealers I ever recommend for fixing things, the customer service is usually miles ahead of other marques.
Toyota Corolla Verso - Wiper juddering - Andrew-T

But if a sloppy spindle is part of the problem, that will remain ?

Toyota Corolla Verso - Wiper juddering - Steveieb
Thanks Andrew for reminding me of my initial observation.
The holding nut is perfectly tight but the arm clicks and moves when the arm is raised.
The car is a 2003 but in great condition so maybe I've got to live with the problem.
Toyota Corolla Verso - Wiper juddering - Metropolis.
Yes, but it rules one item out completely.
Toyota Corolla Verso - Wiper juddering - Steveieb
Thanks Yoke and Metroplis.
I called at Steven Eagel Toyota and the parts man offered to fit the new blade.
When he hit a snag with the fixing he called the technician who took the blade into the workshop.
All sorted and no judder.
The new blade is miles better than the Bosch and has an aero foil.
Really grateful .
Brilliant !
Toyota Corolla Verso - Wiper juddering - yokel38

glad you got it sorted! Nothing more annoying then dodgy wipers. I've worked in a Toyota dealership for the last 33 years, I knew they'd sort it for you.

Toyota Corolla Verso - Wiper juddering - Steveieb
What amazing service , so I wrote to thank them.
And brilliant advice from You Yoke and Metropolis.

Be most grateful if you would advise on which other parts are better sourced from Toyota such as oil filters etc and does a VVTI need special oil ?

Cheers
Toyota Corolla Verso - Wiper juddering - yokel38

The oil should be either 5/30 before 2010, and 0/20 if vehicle is produced after 2010, but putting 5/30 in a newer one won't do any harm at all, the oil filter is around £11, but I'll be honest the air and cabin filters can be a bit steep at around £20 each, and can be sourced from factors at a fraction of that price, personally I would always use a genuine oil filter though. Try your arm and ask for trade prices, the worst that can happen is they'll say no.
