My washer low indicator is permanently on even though the reservoir is full.

I’ve used Aldi winter washer fluid but reading on line I found that the system may be dependent on the MB fluid which has a different conductivity.

So can I cure the warning light by siphoning off some fluid and filling with genuine MB fluid ?

I had a similar issue on my VW after using Rain-X screenwash additive - Iregularly checked the level visually and just topped up with plain water (it was summer) and the warning eventually went off - subsequently I use either VW fluid or Prestone without any further issues.

Washer bottles usually have some sort of float which as it goes down triggers a sensor. I don't think the brand of fluid maters although cheap stuff can cause problems with the jets

I guess this is an E class W 211 model . The reservoir is in the wing recess , so access is awkward. I would suspect the float system is all gunged up causing it to stick on “empty “ . You could try flushing the bottle with a hose , otherwise it’s out with the toolkit. The sensor is not in the wash fluid , but the float is .

That sounds like a disgracefully sneaky way to make users buy special stuff when normal logic would say bog-standard screenwash should be more than adequate.

You may think that - but more likely the sensor gets coated with a gelling agent in some screenwash additive

Try this. Syphon off as much as possible, then pour in a kettleful of really hot water. Leave to soak for about an hour. Then insert a hose connected to the rising main cold water tap as far as you can and turn on full to give it a good flush.

Thank you all.

I plan to back wash the bottle as suggested and then try the system without additive. How about trying filling with a solution of washing up liquid to clean out the grease ?

But if this works I will fill with a weak solution of Prestone ? Or can you recommend another brand.

As regards Rain X there are reports of this setting off the warning light too and I had big problems with the anti mist which took me ages to remove after it caused visibility issues which I reported to Aldi who were discounting both products. I had no reply from my message to Rain X in the States.

Washing up liquid often includes gelling agents so I wouldn't use it.
