2002 VW Polo PD TDI - Radiator cap hard to undo and tighten - alan kearn

Yesterday I found some water under the car and was not sure if it was through the garage wall or from the car. The radiator is topped indirectly from a plastic bowl with a plastic screw cap to the left of the radiator normaly you can see the water level through this plastic bowl but it is now grubby with age and difficult to see through. I decided to take the plastic cap off to check the water level but it was very tight and I had a struggle to unscrew it all the way out. It is also going to be very tight to screw all the way back in (its not cross threaded) and I am afraid I will not tighten it down enough. The cap is probably tight because its not been unscrewed many time as the car has only done 20,00 miles. Would it be safe to spray a few drops of oil or spray silicone lubricant or wd 40 on the plastic cap thread to ease it or would these cause damage.

Thanks

No problem giving the thread a light lubrication . I would also give the cap seals a little spray , just to spruce them up a bit .

It sounds as if that cap has not been released for several years. I would have thought an 18-year-old car should have had a coolant change within living memory - if it hasn't, that may have contributed to the opacity of the reservoir ?

It has had the coolant replaced

Its also had the cambelt change every 4 years( 2006 2010 2014 2018), and at least twice the water pump in that time although the cambelts were changed at the recommended intervals the mileage between them were ridiculously low.

In that case I would lubricate the thread with a smear of soap rather than anything oily, since it is part of a water-based system. Probably doesn't matter though.

Why every 4 years? Seems ridiculously overcautious...c.f. Ford 10yrs.

Depends on the spec of the antifreeze. Uncles Suzuki is still every 3 years.

I think the 4 years applies to the cambelt, Skidpan - which usually means new coolant and waterpump too.

Thanks for your replies

The smearing soap on the cap thread advice made it a lot easer to tighten the cap down down

The OP admits to only changing the waterpump twice but changing the antifreeze every 4 years is good practice unless its one of the long life ones. It only costs about a tenner for 2.5 litres (plenty for a small engine like the Polo) so why not.
