VW T Cross - Exporting a family car from NL to the UK - Jonathan Dennis

Hi there, hope someone can help me with this as I am struggling to find clear info.

Currently in the Netherlands with a NL register car. Moving back to the UK at the end of Jan and wish to drive home in the car, which is LHD.

Eventually I want to sell the car but that's for another day.

There is a process here whereby I am required to de-register the car and get approval for export from the Dutch. Then I get temporary plates and can drive it on Dutch roads for 14 days. Or I can do this, deregister online from the UK later - but they wont give me this certificate. God knows what the implications of that are.

What worries me is whether I can drive it through France and the UK. Obviously it isn't registered in the UK currently.

If anyone has any experience of this situation some advice would be wonderful.

Jonathan

If you drive the car to the UK before you take up residency in the UK, if only by one day, then you can drive it here as a visitor with no more formalities than a Dutch holidaymaker.

Once you have the car here and become resident, you'll need to park it off the highway until it's been re-registered at DVLA and insured with a UK company.

You will need to check whether, post-Brexit, import duties and/or VAT are payable.

Given all the likely hassle and the low price you can expect to get if you try to sell a LHD car in the UK, it may be worth doing the sums comparing your suggested course of action with selling it in NL and hiring a car over here when you come.
