A small parking hit and run on my partners Flame red metallic Captur has opened my eyes to the importance of considering the cost of repairs when choosing a colour.

Even with the paint code, there turned out to be four variants of the colour.

So a paint analyser costing £4 k is essential to match the colour exactly . But it seems that Mazda Red is the most difficult to match which takes up to five paint colours mixed together to match the original.

insurance companies are getting wise to this and raising premiums accordingly. A small dent on a door often requires the whole side of car to be painted costing around £1000 if the car is to be retailed.

Another example I saw is an Five week old A5 hit in a car park damaging the headlight. Repair costs £2500. So the insurance route was taken.

Its not easy making metallic paint blend in, which is the reason why several panels or a whole side of a car has to be done, if you paint one panel on its own it will look different to the others and not all paint is made by the same companies

if you look at some silver/grey metallic cars you can see if one panel has had a spray repair done due to it looking usually lighter than the rest, in order to blend in the near panels the spray is lighter sprayed onto the panels to make them blend in

My brother is a sprayer and says its difficult with certain colours to get them right and can take several attempts

I agree, it is one of my favourite colours, along with Ink Blue (dark blue metallic) seen on some Nissans.

I'm no expert ,but it sounds to me as if you are being spun a yarn. It may be the variety of metallic ingredient, not the shade of red, which needs exact matching. In optical terms greens are the easiest shades for the eye to distinguish. Have you consulted an experienced bodyshop rather than a dealer ?

Hi Andrew,

The body shop I used have their own analyser to check the paint on your car and mix their own paint.
They specialise in classic VW eg MK 1 and 2 and cars of this era.

Forgot to mention, a friends Mazda CX 5 was scratched on the Tesco car park. Hoping to avoid the insurance route they arranged a quote but soon retracted when the pearlescent paint was estimated at £500

Why are you talking about painting for a small dent? If the paint is unbroken it can be fixed for about 40quid. Chipsaw$% recently did some deep scratches in a metallic colour for 200quid a panel. I think the op should get some other quotes.

Totally agree with this. My local bodyshop can match and blend any body colour and for a very reasonable price. A lot of cars now have the paint code on a sticker on the car. As usual the job is only as good as the technician. A lot of bodyshops are selective in the work they undertake.

When I caught the sticky out door handle on a Passat on a concrete column in a car park I got it fixed by an independent dent and scratch repair guy. He did a fantastic job for £50. He even had lamps to bake the paint.

All he wanted for a paint match was the vehicle's registration number.

The local VW dealer wanted £400+ for a new handle.

I have since lost his card :-(

They're dependent on the skill and thoroughness of the individual; franchisee - and the weather - I prefer the sort of outfit which is based in an industrial unit so they can close the doors and keep the dust /moisture out.

Not everyone is able to spot a poorly blended body panel, you need certain light and look at a certain angle to see any imperfections, many a time I have looked at a car where its been sprayed and you can see where its been patched, tell the seller and they dont believe you, later they say yes its had a touch up for a small dent

We had a metallic Red Mondeo and in the 3 years we owned it the car was in the body shop 6 times, once for repairs after a break in and 5 times for warranty repairs on the doors. Each time the colour match was undetectable.

Dad had a silver Micra and wee all know what a pig that can be to match. Some kind soul hit the corner of the rear bumper and took it down to the black plastic its made of. Main dealer wanted to fit a new bumper and paint the who rear of the car blowing the paint down the sides to match the colour, that will be £400 sir. I took it to a local "smart" repair chap (not one who works outside or in a tent) - the wife had used him for their lease returns at work and the work had always been great. Took a quick look, no problems, £55 cash. As before he made a superb job which was undetectable 5 years later. When dad wiped the whole side of the car off a year later (his fault) the insurers repairer did a perfect match whatever the light.

There should be excuses with modern mixing technology.

In those instances the customer was totally happy since the repairs were as good as they could be. In the case of the bumper repair the Nissan solution requiring parts and loads more paint and over £400 extra would have been no better.

Again it depends if you can see it, not everyone can, I have seen many cars that have looked good to the owner but was actually a not so good job not noticed, but I know what you mean, it annoys me when I see a poor job.

My wife had a 2015 Clio in red which looked very much like the Mazda red

However it was a nightmare to match. It seemed to be a Matt orange colour with a green laquer coating which in the end looked really nice.

The cost of repairing minor dents has become ridiculous. The only time our battered and scratched old family Focus workhorse has ever been to a bodyshop was when a third party's tractor removed the rear bumper and damaged a wing and door, rendering it illegal - and almost terminal. Amazingly, the cost of the replacement hire car (a Toyota Auris, so disliked it was nick-named the 'orrible 'orace) exceeded that of repair. Most have been successfully persuaded that a car's appearance should remain as pristine as Joan Collins despite its age and vulnerability to frequent impacts. All grist to the automotive economic mill.

But if VERY cheap annoys everyone else that looks at the car, that's a bonus.
