Hi Guys,
Some advice required please regarding battery desulphation charging >14.4 V or battery replacement. Is it likely that disconnecting the battery for either of the above mentioned actions will cause any issues with the ECU or other electrical systems? Or is it better to parallel up a slave battery first. It’s my son’s car, an Alfa Romeo 159 TI 16V JTDM 150 Sportwagen. Thanks in advance for any recommendations.
Regards Mo

Nothing special required when replacing the battery. Just remember to release the negative lead first and refit last after renewal. Don’t recommend parallel connection to another battery. Could result in issues if the leads short together. Also make sure the new battery has the correct spec , especially the Cca rating .

Elekie,
Thank you for your advice. At the moment the battery is on charge, but just with a 2A smart charger, (son uses it to keep his Honda monkey bike battery charged). Tomorrow I will try one of my smart chargers, a 3.5A or upto 8A before I attempt a desulphation cycle, but don’t have much confidence in restoring battery capacity. A search online suggests a range of 640 cca / 70Ah to 740 cca / 80Ah batteries, which I think we will have to buy in the next week or so.
Cheers, Mo

I would suggest getting the biggest battery that will physically fit.

Thanks, that was my intention Railroad. Current battery is 80Ah, and is approximately 305mm long. Online battery selection guides give nearest size as 315mm, although many recommend a 278mm length. There is just a fingers width gap to the end of battery tray now, may remove battery to check space.I have a Banner battery technical guide which advises to select replacement with the highest Ah rating, and if space permits a 190mm rather than 175mm high battery as it has a greater acid volume which gives a superior charge acceptance! So just need to decide on Varta, Yuasa, Exide or maybe another Banner.

Thanks all, take care.

Update, two weeks ago fitted a Varta silver dynamic 85Ah / 800 CCA battery after car failed to turn over, all okay now. Tried to recover the failed battery using long slow charge followed by desulphation cycle but chargers indicated a fault. Looks like it’s from 2014 according to code on battery. The cells didn’t show much signs of gassing, and SG was around 1.20. I will need to investigate parasitic current drain, previously measured at 160mA, battery negative to earth, with car unlocked and doors closed after 10 minutes wait. Also checked volt drop across all fuses in under bonnet box, all at zero, but that’s for another warmer day.

Cheers, and take care all.

A 10 minute wait for checking a battery drain is not long enough. I would leave it at least 40 mins before doing any tests . A lot of modern day cars can take a least an hour to shut down.
