Lovecars on the Road new car TV series on ITV4 - badbusdriver

I'll reserve judgement till I've seen it, but I don't hold up much hope.

Partly because, while Tiff was busy dissing Top Gear for being a 'light entertainment show', Fifth Gear was also guilty of doing idiotic stuff with no actual purpose (other than entertainment value). Also, Tiff says the show is for "people who love cars" the trailer mainly showed high performance and excessively powerful cars, where personally, The trailer also included Tiff doing his usual sideways driving style, something which, unless in an actual drifting competition, serves no purpose other than entertainment value. I'd like to see more humdrum stuff at a lower price point (which is the kind of cars I love). I'm thinking of things like the 'old' Top Gear episode with 1.0 cars across Ukraine from Crimea, or more recently, the Suzuki Ignis 4x4 vs Panda 4x4 up a mountain.

But I will certainly watch the first episode.

Formulaic but largely inoffensive.

Lovecars on the Road new car TV series on ITV4 - concrete

I think there is room for a decent motoring programme on mainstream TV. Like many others when Top Gear went to Clarkson and his playmates and so on it became a right turn off, hammering high performance cars, smoking tyres etc etc, who drives like that???

The whole genre has been well and truly trashed by these so called 'enthusiasts'. I have always been an enthusiastic motorist and owned or driven many makes and models over the years. Not once have I longed to smoke the tyres of a Lambo or Ferrari etc. I like sports cars and used to enjoy driving them. More difficult nowadays because of traffic but still nice to drive on occasions. Mainly though, once adulthood sets in motoring becomes more prosaic and interest in cars changes to more mundane features like space, comfort, reliability etc. That is what the previous shows would focus on. A new show with similar focus would do equally well IMHO. Maybe sad old geezer territory but there are plenty of us around.

Cheers Concrete

It is a competent clone of Fifth Gear which was itself a clone of the original (pre-Clarkson) Top Gear. The problem is that for most people the format gets boring after 30 min even if you break up (ordinary) car videos with some genuine car news and car mechanic DIY tips.

Clarkson and his producer understood that and turned Top Gear into 60 min of car related entertainment. They proved that is what viewers want by making it a smash hit around the world.

I also liked the ‘old geezer’ type motoring programmes - Shaw Taylor road testing the latest iteration of the Cortina which now features a heated rear windscreen (crikey!). I find that catered for these days on YouTube. There are so many car reviews, some excellent, some not so good and some only superficial. There are also YouTube videos on motoring related matters (I watched one about dismantling a DSG gearbox and understood about a tenth) so the old geezer market is catered for elsewhere than on TV. That only leaves Top Gear type programmes as the way to go as far as I can tell. Personally, I find them rather tiresome; grown men behaving like louts. With four impressionable sons, in the Clarkson/Hammond/May days I wasn’t entirely happy with some of the content.
