But only selling new cars until they get replaced, then switching to servicing.

Good move from Ssangyong, they have a similar model line up and can increase their dealer network considerably.

No way the bulk of that dealer network will stick around with Ssangyongs limited range, they’ve been struggling with dwindling sales from Mitsubishi’s dated offerings for years with many already switched away to other brands or solely used like my old employer. Ssangyong wouldn’t even come close to matching Mitsubishi sales unless there’s a full new and more mainstream range waiting in the wings.

It’s getting cars Type Approved that I see as the bigger issue. Assuming that the UK retains EU-esque safety and emissions legislation (they’d be crazy not to), why would Mitsubishi go to the trouble of homologating cars for a tiny market, with all the cost incurred?
And given the fact that gaining approval would involve huge amounts of manufacturer support, why would Mitsubishi assist when they’re the ones pulling out as part of the Renault/Nissan/Mitsubishi alliance?
I’d love to see me proved wrong to retain some variety in the UK marketplace, but it’d be a convoluted arrangement.

Most EU directives on safety, emissions and a number of other items are similar to UN-ECE regulations with which most of the rest of the world already comply-there are usually slight differences in enforcement dates.

It may be as much to do with the brand perceptions as the model range.

Ssangyong have a reputation (justified or not) for cheap fairly crude vehicles - certainly the case a decade ago.

Mitsubishi are still regarded as a higher quality brand - even if that goes back to the Shogun. There is quite a lot of customer loyalty.

They both currently produce 4x4 - although Ssangyong are close to half the price. Mitsubishi range is wider.

Perhaps the Mitsubishi brand will be revitalised with much lower manufacturing cost and a rebranded Ssangyong using a mix of both companies best design features.
