Ford Fiesta - Mk7 Fiesta 1.6 TDCI - Stuarta99

Hi all,

I've just been looking at an 09 Fiesta 1.6tdci Titanium for my wife to replace her 206 however I've read some articles that it's not the most reliable engine. She probably only covers a couple thousand miles a year as it's a secondary car to us really.

The 206 has come unreliable as the battery keeps dying if we don't run it for a week and she's always liked Fiesta's and this Titanium looks amazing in the hot magenta but obviously want to make sure it's right.

Many thanks

Low mileage in a diesel is a bad idea. That engine is notorious and at that age I would avoid it. Look for a nice petrol example instead. If you tell us your location and budget I am sure one or 2 of the other forum members will be able to help.

That's what I was afraid of although I've got a B8 A4 TDI and only do about 8k but then that's probably double what she would do.

Shame cos it's a nice looking car and keeps the tax low. They do have a 60 plate 1.6 petrol but for 1k more but that's £150 tax. The £30 was appealing but then maybe the petrol would be more reliable....and quieter

You need a Fiesta with the 1.25 4 cylinder engine . Nothing else . Or a 1.4 version . Both petrol. Very little trouble. Interestingly, Ford has stopped production of Fiesta models with the Diesel engine due to lack of sales .

I have done some research on that engine (which is fitted to a huge range of vehicles from Citroen, Peugeot and Ford) in the past regarding a small van. What I found is that while the engine can be very reliable, it very much depends on how well it has been serviced and maintained. Which is of course very difficult to find out when buying used.

Does not get away from the question of why you’d be looking at buying a diesel when covering such a small mileage?, that makes no sense at all, even if there wasn’t question marks over reliability!. And worrying about the extra £2.30 per week tax the 1.6 petrol would cost over the diesel also seems particularly short sighted given how much bigger the potential bills for fixing something on a diesel would be over a n/a petrol. But sticking with that 1.6 petrol, i was under the impression that engine was only available as an auto, which in the case of the mk7 Fiesta, would be the notoriously unreliable Powershift dual clutch automated manual. If that is the case, then it definitely needs to be avoided.

For the best reliability on a Fiesta mk7, you want the 1.25 or 1.4 petrol as mentioned. These were developed by Yamaha and are cracking engines with much better reliability than the 1.0 Ecoboost.

I wouldn't normally entertain a diesel for her, but it was just a nice overall package and agree with the tax differences being negligible.

The 1.6 model is definitely manual and I'm sure the 120bhp could be some fun compared again to the diesels. Seems to be no 1.25 or 1.4's around me especially in Titanium from and looks like the 1.4 is the same tax as the 1.6 anyway

Just found another Titanium with the 1.4 petrol engine, 52k on a 2010. Looks nice and hopefully a good option
