Peugeot 2008 - Mot failures - Dione84
Hi I’m thinking of buying a used car, checked the mot history and not sure if the failures would affect it in future if anyone could advise? Obviously these have been fixed as it passed last Mot but not sure if any faults might happen again

Do not drive until repaired (dangerous defects):
Front Brake disc in such a condition that it is seriously weakened (1.1.14 (a) (ii))
Rear Brake disc in such a condition that it is seriously weakened (1.1.14 (a) (ii))
Repair immediately (major defects):
Nearside Front Drive shaft joint constant velocity boot split or insecure, no longer prevents the ingress of dirt (6.1.7 (g) (ii))
Exhaust system insecure (6.1.2 (a))
Nearside Front Shock absorbers has a serious fluid leak (5.3.2 (b))
Offside Front Shock absorbers has a serious fluid leak (5.3.2 (b))
Brake performance not tested (1.2.1 (g))

Goodness! Can't be more than seven years old. Looks a bit iffy. Please provide mileage and reg no. so we can check this is genuine and not a plant from a Nissan salesperson or a vengeful Peugeot employee. Obviously all these faults could be the result of wear and tear.

If all those faults are present at that mileage I would suspect it has been tampered with (clocked, in the old terminology) ? On the other hand if the car has passed a repeat test, it ought to be OK ....

To have such a comprehensive list of actual failures would see me walking swiftly away from this particular car, if no one has bothered to have a glance at the discs (see the through the wheels) or spot a split CV boot or the exhaust loose or shock absorbers leaking fluid, then when did anybody last bother changing the engine oil, check the gearbox oil level, change coolant or air or fuel filters...have you seen and checked a believable service history, those discs didn't get to failure state in a matter of weeks.

Assuming the discs have all been changed, then they should be ok for 3 or 4 years assumong you get the brakes serviced properly every year or other year, But, no doubt the rest of the braking system has been neglected as badly so its easily possible it needs 1 to 4 new calipers next as they start to seize, assuming dampers were renewed and not just cleaned off (and re-presented for mot elsewhere?) they should be ok too, CV joint boot the other side will probably come out in sympathy with its oppo, depending on the quality and type of boot fitted to the side that failed i'd want that inspected.

I would only buy this car if it was seriously cheap, circa 2/3rds or more cheaper than a better historied same mileage same year alternative.

Find another.

I haven't a clue if that's cheap or not, no idea of the year mileage spec service history or number of previous neglectful owners...edit we now know the year and mileage.

For £5800 there's plenty of cars about that won't have an MOT failure sheet like that one.

Note 5 miles covered between falure and pass, so it wasn't left with the failing garage at the time, wonder if it was re-presented elsewhere with now cleaned off shock abosrbers, also discs forst noted as advisories at 41k.

If you are still interested in this car, i wouldn't, i would want to see the service history in a believable form.

Walk away, this car has had a hard and neglected life, loads more about at the same sort of money.

I'd avoid this one too. Sounds like the previous owner relied on MOT to tell them the condition of the car, and ignored advisories.

Oil filled shock absorbers, blimey, thought those went out of favour long ago in favour of gas!

Don't 'gas filled' shock absorbers still use oil, the gas pressure helps reduce cavitation in the fluid?

Yes you are right!

For discs, shocks and CV boot to need replacing at c.50,000 miles is unacceptable. I naturally will be comparing our newly acquired 2008 SUV to our old Focus estate which at nearly 20yrs old and 150,000 miles has original shocks, boots and suspension bushes. The front discs last c. 100,000 miles and rear drums are original, only recently needing new shoes.
