Mazda 6 Tourer - Engine Malfunction - LEE BLOODWORTH

I have a 2016 Mazda 6, 2.2 turbo diesel, 80,000 miles with FSH. It has just gone into main dealer with engine malfunction light on and they have diagnosed it as turbo failed (one of the flaps is broken is what they told me). To drive the car, all is well other than lag in acceleration, it won't accelerate until the car reaches 2500 rpm in each gear (manual). Their is no smoke or odd sounds. I have read about similar issues that have proved to be blocked fuel filters or issues with Diesel Particulate Filter. Can anyone tell me if Mazda are taking the p$@s?

If full Mazda service history push for a goodwill payment to cover all/most of the cost, whatever the problem is.
I would be asking what a turbo flap is, there are vanes and actuators but can’t quite visualise what they mean by a flap.
That engine has poor reliability so stand by for posters who have knowledge of the issues....

Mazda 6 Tourer - Engine Malfunction - LEE BLOODWORTH

Hi Ian D, thanks for the advice. It gets a little tricky as the car is a company car / lease hire, Mazda have had to go to lease company for authorisation to carry out the repair to which they have asked Mazda for a goodwill payment. Mazda have since responded by stating the cars1st 2 services were late therefore if the damage can be due to this, I / my company will foot the bill.

Get rid of it quickly. These are notoriously fragile engines which don’t compare regards reliability to Mazda’s bulletproof petrol motors. A few minutes spent googling will reveal plenty of expensive woe relating to this engine.

Update.

Called into Mazda today, they havent yet taken the car to bits. They have said a rivet has come off of the turbo therefore the turbo needs replacing. When plugged into the diagnosis it gave code for turbo malfunction. I am currently trying to obtain a copy of this. Could the 1st two services over running by a couple a 1000 miles have any connection to this problem?

That may not be the cause of the problem, but it may affect the degree of goodwill you get from a warranty repair ?

Exactly why does the turbo need replacing? The only 'rivets' on turbos would be on the wastegate or vane actuator attachment which surely can be repaired.

(Failure of these sub-assemblies will mean the turbo will not operate properly but the turbo itself may be quite undamaged. I would ask for a more detailed explanation)
