Peugeout 306 HDI meridian Diesel 1999 model - Meaning of warning light on dashboard - PennyPitstop

Hello. Can anyone please help me decipher a symbol which appeared on my dashboard this morning? As my car is so old, I cant find it online. (The manual disappeared and I cant find it in my Haynes manual).

Its an orange light. The symbol is a circle with a partial circle to the right and left outside the circle. Inside the circle there is a mini car which is at an angle. Under the car are two tracks crisscrossing each other like an x.

Is this something to do with the traction or anti- brake locking system? And is it safe to make a 34 mile return journey today and perhaps a 6 mile journey tomorrow?

Don’t think these were ever fitted with traction control. I suspect the warning light is related to the Abs system, if it has it fitted . Ok to drive , but the antilock system will not be uk.search.yahoo.com/search?p=peugeot+306+instrumrn...0

Yes, I think it's the ABS warning light.

From reading various posts on Peugeot forums, it seems that failure/damage to an ABS sensor is fairly common.

Maybe worth checking the brake fluid level?

Thank you both for your replies. I checked the brake fluid level earlier and it seems to be ok. A trip to the mechanics is imminent I think!

I enjoyed driving a 99T Meridian diesel for several years. Your symbol is clearly indicating a brake problem, possibly ABS (does your car have that?) or perhaps suggesting the front pads are wearing thin. Many Peugeots had a simple detector attached to the pad which caused this lamp to illuminate, but the wiring didn't usually last 20 years ... Check for that first before taking the ABS apart ! IIRC the ABS unit is behind the passenger-side headlamp.

Change the country in the drop down box in the top right then select your vehicle - yes the 306 owners handbook is still on there.

Lee, thats extremely useful. It will also come in handy for future problems. I will not be able to fix them, but at least I can now maybe identify them!

Thanks. I had a look under the bonnet and I can see the ABS box where you said it was. It looks ok to me but then Im not someone who tinkers with cars. The brakes were given a revamp last year for the MOT but then I did use the car a lot during lockdown for visiting an elderly relative. Thank you for your suggestions. The plan is to leave it with the experts tomorrow morning and beg them to squeeze me in if at all possible!

Phew! At least those of us who thought it might be something to do with the ABS system were near the mark.

I hope the job wasn't too expensive - it sounds as if it should not have been.
