SEAT Ibiza 1.4 FR Reg SX14AVU petrol 140hp - Too many fault codes - Stephen Stipetic

My car started running horrible and shaky last night. I called a breakdown service and they checked the faults which were logged as follows:-

I hope this is understandable, I am new at this stuff.

All those faults maybe someone can help hopefully

That is all of them, could the problem be one electrical item?

I look forward to any suggestions

Looks like you have fault code meltdown here. Think you’re going to need a bigger scanner to cope with them all. Suggest take the car to a competent garage. Let them take a look.

Thanks for your suggestion. Hopefully I can get it scanned again tomorrow and see what it says with another scan with the faults erased and at the local service station

I too am new to this stuff, and so far my impression (formerly based just on forum posts from people with the doubtful benefit of OBDII, now reinforced with a very little experience) is that for a lot of people (including quite a few in the trade) a lot of the time, it is a snare and a delusion.

The first code you list is described here

www.obd-codes.com/p0691

(This is just the first site that came up and not necessarily a good one.)

"Cooling Fan 1 Relay Control Circuit Low

The causes and fixes listed assume this is an isolated code, (which yours evidently is not) and that its cause is directly related to the nature of the code, which is very often not the case.

I think your suggestion of an electrical fault is a good one. For example (best case) you might have a loose battery lead, or a bad battery, or (worst case?) your ECM (or whatever its called this week) might be faulty.

If you want to do anything DIY with the codes you'll probably have to search through them online and see if a pattern emerges

Do all these codes keep coming back? Presumably you have reset them then run the car to see which ones return?

Unfortunately I didn't have access to another scanner but will do tomorrow. I was too busy getting the car home from 50 miles away.

Thanks. It will take a bit of time, and I did start to see if there was a pattern to the faults but what I will do today is take each code and check the definition given on the internet and see if I can find the "key" to the situation. Can't stop myself feeling one stupid fault is causing all this nonsense.

Some of the codes may be old codes due to low battery voltage or something, run the car, erase the codes and then see what comes up, may be just one or two which will make diagnostics easier

Yes I have not had any checks for codes done since I got the car 2 years ago because so far it has been fine. It is in for diagnostic checks now. The battery maybe is not in so good health either possibly being as old as the car.

How old is the battery?

Low voltage can generate all sorts of strange codes? Some of those codes are electrical.

SEAT Ibiza 1.4 FR Reg SX14AVU petrol 140hp - Too many fault codes - Stephen Stipetic

The battery could be as old as the car, about 6 years and is now starting to show it's age hence the amount of electrical faults, 15 out of 25 which seems to me to indicate a common electrical fault, and the common throughout so far appears to be the battery. I will have to wait until the diagnostics have been carried out to see what the service station tells me.

Latest update on my car. The local service station diagnostic tester is unable to erase the fault codes for a clean start to find the fault(s), so the car has now been moved to a main Seat dealer in Scotland for diagnostic checks. I will let everyone know the outcome it could be interesting!

The car is now running as it used to. Seat say they had to by trial and error find that two ignition coils had suddenly packed up, causing false codes to be thrown out. Had all 4 coils replaced, and all faults cleared. Myself not sure that the defective coils could give so many fault codes, and not show up a misfire from a cylinder. Any views on this one?
