Used black stove and grate polish on the car today to cover scratches on interior plastics. Can’t believe how good it looks. Just hope no one gets in the car with white trousers on now! Has anyone else used unusual products on car care?

For small black areas I have found black shoe polish to be wonderful. Then-for a general "dash" shine, for years I have used any accessible multi surface domestic cleaner. The trick with the latter is to make sure you let it properly dry on the surface before polishing off. Both items have negligible cost in comparison to expensive stuff from motorists shops and do a thoroughly satisfactory job.

You have to be careful with plastic dashboards and other such plastics including on the outside open to sun damage, you need something designed to 'feed' the plastic otherwise it will dry out and eventually crack.

Mr Sheen and such polishes will be ok, but be careful about using household cleaners, i've seen these general cleaners cause thin soft plastic coatings to start to peel off.

FWIW i use AutoSmart's 'Finish' for plastics.

Use 303 Aerospace protectant (Amazon or Fleabay). I used to use Armorall thats pretty decent as well.

When working as a car valeter in the dim and distant past, i discovered that for small nasty stains on upholstery, brake and clutch cleaner worked a treat. I remember the smell, i'm sure you could easily get high if using it in a confined space!. If memory serves, the brand was 'Wurth'.

This was 20+ years ago though, so no idea if current brake and clutch cleaner is the same or whether or not it would be safe to use on upholstery?.

As to boot polish, i remember my Dad talking about using it on tired looking vinyl roofs (remember them?).

I remember a liquid air freshener leaking in my Passat and taking the top finish off the plastic. Made such a mess, like an acid effect.
