Been quoted £200 for three year total loss on an 18 month old car recently purchased. Never used it before, what are people’s views please.

Just after a bit of advice.

Thanks.

On a £15k car sorry.

Who is supplying the insurance?

If it's a selling dealer then the likelihood is that it is overpriced.

Try quotes from a comparison site.

In our household we have two cars on which I have GAP insurance. One is owned outright and the second car is on a personal hire contract.

I used ALA for GAP insurance on both of them. On the first one I used the HJ code to get a discount ( might have been 12% ) but on the more recent one I got a bigger discount by using the Martin Lewis Money Saving Expert website and I believe the discount was significantly greater.

Just google Money Saving Expert and in their indexes look under insurance, then car insurance and you’ll see GAP insurance. I had a look a moment ago and they are offering a discount of 25% by entering the code MSE25.

I must state that I have no connection with any of the above so I have no interest in their business. I did find that ALA were helpful with my enquiry before purchasing and then buying the GAP Insurance on their website was straightforward.

Hope this info helps you get your GAP insurance at a good price.

Great, really helpful thank you.

In terms of general principles, do people think it’s worth it?

Like anything else, you decide what it's worth to you, if you think you need it.

There are different types of GAP insurance. For someone using PCP or leasing where there might be a liability if the payout for a loss didn't meet the settlement figure then possibly - and definitely if they might not have the cash to pay a shortfall should the worst happen.

If it's owned outright and written off, there's no "gap" as such and I imagine the most common version is return-to-invoice insurance. But a lot of standard car insurance will pay invoice price if it's written off in the first year anyway (or at least used to).

If you aren't aware of what you're being offered then they aren't explaining it properly.

It's pretty much certain to be cheaper if you buy it direct.

I thought gap insurance was to cover the difference between the amout owed if the car was written off and the actual value of the car. There seems to be little point having gap insurance for a used car where the purchase price and the value are the same.

The write-off value isn't the same as the purchase price - and the write-off value drops further over time - the GAP insurance covers the difference at the end of the period insured, which could be as long as 5 years.

I took out gap insurance when I leased my Volvo, since bought it, the dealers 3 year deal was very overpriced. I got it for a third of that from the same group that does Insure4hire etc etc. Peace of mind is what it is for, a small sum to cover a potential larger loss. Worth it for me.

80% of new cars & probably most 2nd hand cars are bought on tick!

HP/PCP - the amount outstanding to the finance Company might be considerably more than the write-off value.

Girl who works beside a daughter in law was paid £3,000 from the insurer after driving into a flood, and another £2,500 from the GAP insurance. Despite having a steady income she is a bad credit risk paying up a banger over 3/4 years.

Unless you habitually write off nearly new cars, gap insurance is a waste of money.

It only helps if the car is written off - repairs are normally covered by your insurer.

If the car is a write-off it may cover the difference between the insurance payout and either (a) a replacement new vehicle or (b) finance outstanding. But read the small print!

The replacement vehicle commitment is probably the first year only - otherwise there would be a spate of write offs shortly before the policy ended (3 years?)

Finance outstanding may be less than the vehicle value anyway by the end of the first year - finance companies prefer the value of the vehicle to be higher than outstanding finance for obvious reasons!

You are paying a premium of a few hundred ££ to secure yourself against a loss of (at most) a small number of £££ thousands.

Only you know how likely you are to call on the policy - personally I have driven for 50 years without and write offs in new or old cars.

For someone who buys an expensive new car, perhaps as a one-off, GAP insurance makes perfect sense as the loss could easily be 10s of £1,000s. The probability of a write-off is irrelevant, no-one plans for that, but it's a big financial hit if it occurs.

If the car is new it makes sense to start the GAP insurance when it's a year old as many comprehensive policies will provide a new vehicle in the first 12 months.

The rules of buying insurance has always been the same to me.

I insure anything which costs a lot & I could not afford to buy another easily

1) I insure my house & contents

2) I insure the car as I have to to legally drive on the road. 3rd party is minimum, but in my case, I insure comprehensively as there is no difference worth mentioning in the cost.

3) I used to insure my life for the benefit of my wife & family when I was younger.

4) Travel cover for the medical costs.

Insurance to cover GAP insurance, mobile phone, breakdown cover for electrical goods, car cover for repairs etc are what I call SELF INSURANCE - put, in effect small amounts every month / year, when the bill comes in for a repair / loss I have the money to get the repair done or buy another.

In 53 years driving I have scratched my own car quite a few times & paid my own repair. I have been hit by 3rd parties but never needed to claim on my own policy apart from windscreens. - 3rd PARTIES do pay up eventually - 18 years ago it took the 3rd party 2 years when their insured drove into a car that then hit mine.

People that are careless pay through the nose for cover - it pays to be careful.

I thought for the price of gap insurance for three years at just over £100 the peace of mind was worth it while the car was leased in case in the event of a write off they came after me for their uninsured losses. Now I bought it and it is 3 years old and not as valuable then I don't have gap now. IMHO it is worth considering if you buy or lease new vehicle, especially when it is over £30k in the showroom.
