Toyota 1.5 Petrol engine - thirts

Hi, does anyone have information regarding the reputation/reliability of this engine?

It came out in 2017 as a new four cylinder engine and is already being replaced by a new three cylinder design. It seems a very short life span so has it been replaced because it was a poor design?

It was only the previous 1.33 engine that was "fettled" into a 1.5....nothing radically new...should be no reliability issues at all.

We've had one for several months now. (Yaris Y20)..goes well.!..we had the 1.33 prior to that.

No issues with that at all.

Also, your comments about the engine having a short life is not accurate at all. Bear in mind Toyota is a global company. That engine was around for some time before it wound up in the UK yaris (actually the 1.5 engine in the Yaris hybrid since 2011 and the Prius before that, is part of the same 'NZ' engine family), and will no doubt continue to provide steller service fitted to various other new Toyota's in various other countries world wide for many years to come.

That's an interesting comment and something I hadn't considered.

I am looking at replacing my existing Yaris , which I have had since new (2001) and at the time that engine was new and it has proved completely reliable despite doing the worst journeys an engine can do - short stop start journeys.

We have a 17 Yaris 1.5. I don't expect it to have any engine troubles, Yaris have always been good for 100,000+ with little issue.

As mentioned it was an upgraded version of the 1.33 to improve emissions.

Toyota are moving to a whole new platform for its vehicles and the 1.5 three pot is part of this move.

Thanks, but it had some radical changes

According to Toyota the new engine used a high 13.5:1 compression ratio, adopting a cooled exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) system and extending the variable valve timing operation so the engine can switch between Otto and Atkinson cycles to gain optimum efficiency in different driving conditions.

A new Variable Valve Timing – intelligent Electric Motor (VVTi-E) allowing the engine to switch between Otto and Atkinson cycles (and vice-versa) in a fraction of a second. Controlled electronically, closure of the intake valve is delayed, reducing the compression phase and further helping reduce pumping losses (Atkinson cycle), and enabling a prompt return to the Otto cycle for better performance under high loads. The phase shift of the exhaust camshaft is hydraulically controlled.

Toyota’s first water-cooled exhaust manifold - The engineers also focused on improving fuel consumption at sustained motorway cruising speeds, leading to the introduction of a new water-cooled exhaust manifold.

So I think it was a bit more than boring out and tinkering with the 1.33

Toyota rarely get it wrong when it comes to engines and this one is based on a tried and tested design. There’s little to fear from a well maintained example even in the long term.

Toyota rarely get it wrong when it comes to engines

and even when they do (e.g. VVTis drinking oil, AD series head problems etc.) they tend to stand behind them & fix them for free within certain mileage/age constraints (e.g. AD series was 7 years/112,000 miles)

This is why I am looking at buying another Yaris. Toyota's reputation is fabulous and my own Yaris, which is 19 years old and I have had since new, has only needed one new battery, a the rear exhaust replacing, and the water pump as a precaution.

It's milage is a bit low 76,000 but it has the hardest miles for an engine (lots and lots of short journeys) and my wife who tends to treat the clutch, and accelerator as on off switches

The current Yaris, the Y20, is about to be replaced so there should be some good deals out there. If you want another car which will last as long as this one, and you're both happy with the way it drives, you can't do better.

That said, my daughter (who had had several Yarises in the past) tried a Y20 but was more impressed with the Skoda Fabia which she got this month. And the deal was even better: £70 per month less than the Yaris would have cost.

My memory of the 1.3 Yarises that she had was of liveliness, more so than with the 1.5 that she and I test-drove. So it'll be worth having a good long test drive.

I suspect the Yaris I'll be looking at will be less lively than my present one as, like most cars, they tend to gain weight during updates.

I have considered the Skoda, but Toyota reliability/reputation is winning the argument, especially as I tend to keep my cars a long time.
