Hi

I have been thinking of buying this car as it meets a sweet spot for price/features/age. Considering spending up to £14k on a model 1-3 years old.

We have to buy an automatic as my partner has an automatic licence. All the models we've seen so far have a dual clutch. In the HJ review it noted the 2015-16 dual clutches were to be avoided, but does this mean issues with them have been resolved in the later models? It seems to be getting harder to avoid DCT boxes these days.

With it being a relatively low volume derivative of S-Cross, I think I’d be heading to owners clubs and dedicated Facebook groups and the like, and looking for people who actually have experience of running (and potentially repairing) the car.

I want to thank you very much for this reply. I followed your advice and now have a bit more detail from a Facebook group for owners that I want to share, in case anyone else lands here:

"Suzuki has Aisin automatic, which is more a classic automatic, you only have to change oil regulary in the transmission and you'll be fine. No any dual clutch as in case of VW DSG, this is a 6 speed Aisin AWTF-80 SC unit. Oil you should use has to meet JWS 3324 standard in every 60000 km."

Based on this, I suspect I will be ok with regular services by specialists/dealers.

I think after 2016 they switched to a 6 speed torque converter automatic, possibly sourced from Jatco? In which case it solved the inherent problems of DCT entirely!

Other way around, as far as I can see. The DCT arrived in 2015/16 and replaced a CVT.

Oh I see. There was a facelift in 2017, according to Wikipedia the 6 speed arrived with the facelift, although this might not be the UK market nor accurate!

There are road tests and press releases from 2016 (including this one www.honestjohn.co.uk/carbycar/suzuki/sx4-s-cross-2.../), that are based around the arrival of the DCT.
Not sure why the HJ advice is to avoid the DCT, whether there is a known issue or the general anti-DCT message that seems a constant with any similar gearbox on HJ.
