2001 Renault master 2.8 di - Rrenault master smoking - Lee Pullin

Hi Everyone,

Trying to get my van ready for its MoT in September and its smoking on start up and continues to smoke for 10 minutes or so.

My thought was that its the cold start feeding too much fuel.

I wouldn't be normally be bothered but I know the MoT testers have been very strict on any visual smoke.

I'd be grateful if someone has some idea of what may be going on.

The 'technical' section would probably be the best place to ask. I'm no expert, but my first thought is that the van is 19 years old, maybe its just time to get something younger (and cleaner re emissions).

Have you tried giving it a good dose of injector cleaner, or 10 litres of Shell V-nitro fuel to clean things up ?

Moved to Technical.

Injector cleaner, a tank of premium diesel and an Italian tune up (driven hard through the gears, once the engine is warm) on the way to the test centre. Redline it a few times to blow the cobwebs out.

Get them to complete the smoke test when the engine is warm. Also, make sure the air filter is clean.

If it fails on emissions, investigate further at that point.

Black smoke - Too much fuel or too little air. Possible restricted air intake, clogged manifold, stuck open EGR valve or worn fuel injector nozzles.

Blue smoke - Oil consumption. Worn valve guides, worn valve stem seals or worn piston rings or cylinder bores. Probably time to say goodbye.

White/grey smoke - Unburnt fuel. Low compression. Faulty glow plugs (indirect injection engine only). Retarded injection timing.
