Hi all just wanting a bit of guidance. I have a 16 plate E220d Mercedes. 11 months ago (2 months out of warranty) I had camshafts fitted at my own cost at a Mercedes dealership. Last week my car broke down again had a call from Mercedes dealership were I had it recovered to who also carried out the work 11 months ago saying a camshaft has failed and they have requested warranty from Mercedes UK. I won't hear the outcome until Monday.

Does anyone know what I should expect them to cover? Just the parts or part and labour or...?

Car serviced twice by a Mercedes specialist since and isn't due another service for 4000 miles.

It's shocking a 4 year old premium brand car has failed twice with camshaft failures, but what is the mileage, and what kind of driving? Is the oil way getting blocked?

My view is there are some faulty camshafts or it's poor workmanship, but I'd expect Mercedes to cough up. Simply not on.

In 40 years of driving from a Viva HA to a BMW X3 straight six, I have never had a camshaft fail pe se, due to worn lobes or fatigue.

I'd then sell the car.

98k the first time 143k this time. Its actually a common fault at around 100k I know of a few cars now. Rang them today at lunch time because they were supposed to ring me 1st thing this morning now they want 3.5 hours labour to investigate further which if they can claim warranty I won't have to pay for. 45k on the new camshafts is extremely worrying for me.

It is high mileage but it is mostly motorway probably around 80%. The first time they told me they had never seen the problem before and said it seemed like it had ran out of oil at some stage of its life or incorrect oil had been used. So I changed my garage for servicing to a Mercedes specialist and purchased 20L of oil off Mercedes to be used for my piece of mind. From I have owned the car it has never missed a service or been even a mile over the intervil.

Another strange thing was it never seemed off acclerated fine wasn't lumpy. First this was a fault with airflow meter that was all. Went into limp mode. This time said oil pressure low and just stopped..

I can't help but think at this stage they want to pin the problem on something else to walk away from a warranty claim.

The only time I have known of camshaft lobe failure professionally was due to the use of a long out of date oil spec by the MOD which turned out to have a severe lack of anti-wear additives when we had it analysed.

This oil also wrecked some diesel engines with stuck piston rings - due again to the lack of the necessary additive package.

Their attitude being "If it's an engine we use "oil,lubricating, universal, engine for the use of -50 gallon drum. (date of manufacture probably somewhere about in the late 1950's we were told)

I suspect this antique rubbish was found at the back of a warehouse and was dished out to non-frontline and training establishments to try to get rid of it.

It probably dated from the time of Dunkirk and was ok for old Bedford trucks and the like, at that time oil was oil - engine or oil- axle.

Just to clarify about the oil. After the first time I bought a 20L box of oil from Mercedes which has been used in all my services since.

Mercedes rang me on Friday to say they haven't looked at the car yet. Will update thread when I get feedback.

New camshaft fitted by Mercedes Dealership but then went to Merc specialist for subsequent oil services. Even if you supplied them with I presume the correct oil I cannot see How Mercedes will honour the Dealership cam change especially with the very high mileage before the last failure. The fact that you had to pay for the first cam change when only 2months out of warranty does not bode well.

Well they offer a 2 year unlimited mileage warranty with all genuine parts though. They have already asked me for an additional 3.5 hours labour which they have said if its a warranty claim I won't have to pay for. I wouldn't call 40000 miles very much from the last set of cams.

I get what you're saying but I would feel more hard done by if they didn't honour their warranty that I expect than I did when the wouldn't pay out for one that expired.

The parts warranty will only be valid if it has been serviced, subsequently to merc specs with merc specified oil, and they may well require proof of this, which should be specified on the subsequence service invoice(s)

Proof of oil is absolutely no problem as I supply my own oil for the service which I purchased from the very same dealer who has the car at the moment. I bought a 20L box from them which I also have the receipt for.
