Considering all our local garages have been open for weeks and lockdown guidance is so confused there is no longer a need for an extension period.

Had an MOT done a couple of weeks ago at the local garage which has been closed. The owner was welcome of the business.

Just had mine extended to December. I could have had the test done but I thought I'd take advantage of the extension anyway. My car does less than 2,000 miles each year (and it will be far less this year as I've missed out one of the long trips I make due to lockdown).

Extending an MoT holiday made pragmatic sense if it was difficult or impossible to get it done due to CV-19. The dispensation has now outlived its usefulness and normal service should be resumed asap.

The MOT on one of our cars ran out on the 15th June but I had every intention of having it done as normal. But then I damaged my ankle and was unable to drive so that did not happen. The tax expired at the end of May so I put it on SORN. The .GOV site says its on SORN but the MOT date is shown as 15 December, 6 months after the original date so the system has correctly updated.

I doubt if the government would change the date on the MOT's that have been extended. Some people will have bought cars with 6 months MOT without realising its a "free" extension, if that extension were removed they could unknowingly be without an MOT.

On the other hand its a great way for the Government to get some revenue, how much is the fine for no MOT?

Now I am driving again I will be taxing the car next week and will MOT it ASAP. Was fine before lockdown but if they pick up any bits that need attention I would much prefer to fix them on the drive now than in December.

My wife gets a Motability car, it was due to be replaced after our three years with it on the 8th May. Under normal circumstances we'd have the car MOT'd just before the change date. But of course we got a letter from Motability saying the lease would be extended by 6 months like the MOT. I had assumed that rather than '6 months', the lease extension would simply last till the dealers were open again. But no, she got another letter saying that we could order a new car, but we wouldn't get it till the 8th November.

Point being, if there is to be a change on the 6 month MOT extension, we'd be informed in advance by Motability, which we haven't been.

But my van's MoT was also due in May, along with a service, and that is when i had it done.

BBD, the MOT would have been extended by six months a week before the 8th May (if that is the 3 year anniversary). It is now due in November whatever the changes to the lockdown arrangements. That is why they introduced the rolling extension rather than giving all cars a six month extension - it allows them to stop the scheme whenever they deem it appropriate.
