2011 CHEVROLET CAPTIVA 2.0 VCDI AUTOMATIC - Engine won't start after breakdown with DPF fault - Les Shortall

Hi. I am new to the forum and would appreciate your advice please. My Captiva recently broke down. The DPF warning light came on and the car went into limp mode. I tried to do a regen by switching to manual and driving above 4000 revs. After a few minutes the engine started self-revving and making a horrible clacking sound. I pulled over and stopped, called AA. He said the oil level was way up and showed me oil in the inlet manifold hose, probably also in intercooler and everywhere else it shouldn't be. Advised not to try restarting due to risk of overrun.Garage drained and changed the oil, tried to start it. Engine cranks over, won't start and stalls with what they describe as "hydraulic locking". Facing a repair bill of potentially thousands and a lot of money initially to get to the bottom of the problem in the first place. Engine codes read out were P244B, P2463 (twice), P2084 and P0089. Any ideas on what the problem could be and what I should do next ?

Sounds like the engine has self destructed by diesel runaway . I would suggest not worth repairing . Alternatively, a second hand engine may do the job , but could be risky.

Thanks for replying. Is it possible to dig deeper into the engine condition without incurring expensive labour, eg to see if mechanical damage has been done and where ?

Thoughts:. DPF issue has diluted your oil with diesel ( common problem) and caused your engine to be overfull with a mixture of oil and diesel. Eventually can cause self running as combustible liquid enters the combustion chamber uncontrolled. Also can cause irreparable damage to moving parts. "Hydraulic lock" implies there is incompressible liquid in your combustion chambers. To be honest, you may have a scrap engine here, even if it eventually starts. Cheapest option is a replacement used motor but you may still have DPF issues as root cause. It t might be time to cut your losses on the vehicle unfortunately.

I wondered if perhaps the P0089 code indicates a fuel pump failure and that may be why it turns over but won't start ?

As the garage have already advised of hydraulic locking , I would strongly suspect there is severe internal engine damage . Taking the engine apart is an expensive operation, only to be told the engine is toast . The garage may be able to remove the injectors for an internal inspection with a borescope to assess any piston damage . But even this could be costly .

Ah, that is what I was afraid of. I was hoping it might be less complicated to diagnose or even if it is feasible to tackle it myself. But without specialist equipment that is probably also not possible. Thank you very much for responding and giving your insights.
