One in five drivers surveyed say they're having trouble getting back into the habit of driving after doing so few miles during the coronavirus lockdown, with stalling and forgetting to indicate ranking in the top five errors mentioned.

That sounds to me like a normal day in any major conurbation.

Sounds like how 1/5 of people normally drive....don't think they have just forgotten now! :-)

I`ve seen more accidents at crossroads and roundabouts than there was before the lockdown, so its possible that people just approach them much faster than they should or just dont look?

tailgating is much worse now than it was, and some are downright dangerous about it, more than ever imo

Any - Driving once again - groaver

I've found tailgating to be getting progressively worse for around 5 years or so.

I also often wonder how many people who send in their videos to Youtube channels of motorists driving straight through them whilst on a roundabout, had signalled themselves to show the direction they intended to proceed in.

Driving standards are generally getting worse imo.

A guilty pleasure of mine is watching video compilations of bad driving/crashes on YouTube. I have noticed in quite a lot of the US ones, you get text up on the screen 'explaining' what has happened (as if it wasn't obvious), from the person who supplied the footage. But the thing is, when you watch it, so often, the person who is supplying the footage has contributed to the accident/near miss happening!. Through speeding up to stop someone cutting in, speeding up to stop someone pulling out from a side road or whatever!. You have to wonder if these people have actually watched the footage back themselves before submitting it, let alone before adding comments accusing the other driver of being the only person at fault.

But as for current, or lockdown driving, i have witnessed driving more reckless than usual (which wasn't great anyway!). About 15 miles south of me there is a notorious accident blackspot where two very busy local roads join. Both single carriageway, so just a 'normal' junction, heavy traffic during commuting times mean it can be a nightmare, especially so in the moring where the traffic is all heading south towards Aberdeen. What makes it worse is that the junction is on a bend, not blind as such, but not great to see exectly what is happening. About 6 months ago, signs with flashing lights were installed to get traffic to slow down, and this does seem to have helped. But a couple of weeks ago i was heading south when a VW Golf overtook me on the bend at the junction and as it happens, a cyclist was heading in the opposite direction, he had to take evasive action!. Then literally a couple of miles on (same day), another near miss where a car heading north overtook an articulated truck causing southbound traffic (including the numpty who overtook me at the junction) to have to brake!.

I too watch YouTube clips of near -misses and accidents.

I agree that in many cases the driver posting his dash-cam clip has contributed to the incident, either by failed observation, poor positioning, slow reactions or idiotic assumption people will give way whatever he does.

BBD - if you think US accident videos are shocking, check out those from Eastern Europe, and especially Russia. They are in a different league of bad drivers, and apparently almost everyone has a dashcam.

During the lockdown, like many people, I noticed many (bored) 'yoofs' racing about town on relatively empty roads, as well as using the local dual carriageway/bypass as a defacto racetrack or drag strip. They all seem to now pop out for an hour's 'fun' at around 6pm or so, rather than mid afternoon before (some of the) schools went back.

The other 'in thing' is now going around mini roadabouts the wrong way if it means them going (slightly) the more direct route.

During lockdown I was only driving to the supermarket once a week - probably a 4 mile round trip. Nothing else. I haven't had any problem in getting back to normal driving.

As I haven't been working for a good while now (well before the pandemic started), my routine, as least as driving goes, has barely changed - a trip to a nearby town every 1-3 weeks (1 week during cold weather, 3 weeks in hot weather) to keep my eye in and the car in decent order (battery, tyres, brakes) for groceries, with the in-between weeks walking to my local shops.

The only difference for me thus far has been that I couldn't go out and about for leisure (obviously) and cannot properly visit my parents as my mum is in the 'shielding' group, and my sister because she is visiting my parents because she does some of their grocery shopping (and lives closer by).

It's getting rather tedious doing the same boring routine, week after week, but at least me and my car are doing ok, which is something positive.

What I've noticed about many of youtube clips is the camera car joining a two lane carriageway from a roundabout straight into the RH lane. It's like many folk go up the RH lane of a slip road to join another road.

They seem to get upset when I undertake!

They don't often undertake me on M-way slip roads as I'm matching the speed of what's already on.

Well I’m glad it’s not just me who think that a lot of these dash cam near misses/accidents are just one sided, a lot of incidents could be avoided by the driver being the bigger person, so to speak, and giving way, but I suppose they have to have their 15 minutes of fame

and yes the Russians take bad driving to another level

Any - Driving once again - groaver

Talk of Russian drivers: I agree.

However have you seen the ones popping up of Chinese drivers?

YIKES!!! A whole new level of stupidity and incompetence.

Polish drivers seem to accept being pushed to the gutter/ verge by oncoming drivers overtaking on their side of the road.

I suggest a return trip to Barnard Castle to check your competence.
