Renter a digger can't find red diesel? - ShaneClark

Hey, i've a got a digger for a week and I realise I can use red diesel. BUT every petrol station I went around Twickenham doesn't sell it.

Anyone knows any petrol station not far from Twickenham that sells red diesel?

Thank You.

deja vu

I'd imagine it's more likely to be available from forecourt pumps in rural areas than the suburbs. It's also likely that users will buy it in bulk, either tanker delivery or in barrels rather than faffing with filling up a vehicle that's being trailered (as it can run on road using red diesel)

I'd also question how much you'd save, as a proportion of the total cost of hire, by using red diesel.

Indeed - they probably have lost any savings from using red diesel by driving around trying to find a filling station that sells it.

Any boatyards nearby?

Is this the same person that posted exactly the same question a few weeks ago?

Yup, 1st April, different name, same contrived issue. It’s what Dag was getting at with his “deja vue” comment.

What prompts people like our our esteemed OP, ShaneClark, to go to the trouble of posting such inmitigated tripe - not once, but twice?

What's the benefit? Surely there has to be some sort of reasoning attached to it?

Beats me though.

The place he hires the digger from will have fuel.

I can only presume he wants to run his diesel car(s) on the stuff and wants to know where in Twickenham is a petrol station that has a red diesel pump. Back when I lived on a farm, red diesel was only supplied in bulk to farmers or other qualifying firms, so a dedicated storage tank was necessary and some proof you were a legit user and need to sign a legal declaration. I expect the suppliers probably need to report all deliveries/declarations to HMRC.

Never seen a petrol station selling red diesel. Its illegal to run a vehicle on public roads on red diesel with very few exceptions. So a petrol station wouldn't be a right place to sell it.

I have seen a filling station selling red diesel, in the Wye valley on the England/Wales border so plenty of farmers with tractors.

A local indie garage near me has both a red diesel and a paraffin pump on their forecourt, and not in a rural location.

The sign outside also says that they sell leaded 4-star, I didn't think this was legal?

Easy enough to get red diesel if you look. As I recall we established only light use of the digger and therefore little to worry about using ordinary road diesel. If the OP intends to try to run his personal vehicles on this he needs to be careful. HM Customs and Excise still regularly dip diesel tanks in supermarket car parks to check. They also look at the fuel injection system for signs of 'red'. You cannot refuse them or your vehicle is impounded and if you are guilty, confiscated. You have been warned.

Cheers Concrete

Nothing to stop you using leaded 4 star-just not in your car on public highway-same as red diesel.

I use red in my compact tractor. Luckily we have a small forecourt near us that sells it from the pump.

It wouldn't be worth me having a tank of it here, as I get through so little, so would probably just get regular diesel if the local place didn't sell it.

It's currently 70p/L from the garage, suspect you can get it much cheaper for delivery to your own tank (heating oil currently around 25p/L down from nearly 50p/L prior to COVID)

I have 2x20L jerry cans and I doubt I use that much in a year. My little 17hp tractor uses very little but is a useful tool!
