Sorry I did not post this in the classic car section but that is just dead!

A long time ago I was told that classic car insurance was really cheep. I was wondering if this is still the case and if anyone can give me any info on this please

Depends on your definition of cheap, what you're insuring, mileage each year and where it's going to be kept.

I use Classic Line for my 1996 Mercedes E300D, previously Pete Best who'd become rather costly in comparison.

I dont own any classic motor at the moment and nor do I have a motor on the road too!

It is something I am considering

Buy a classic car magazine, there will be plenty of adverts from insurance providers. Get some quotes for whatever classic car you are thinking about.

But unless you have a nice dry garage to keep it in, are a good DIY mechanic (or know a good one) I’d think twice. Any potential savings from lower insurance costs could be wiped out by more frequent maintenance requirements along with constant ongoing preventative measures to keep rust at bay.

Classic car insurance can be cheaper as typically classic cars are well looked after and kept secure as they are the owners pride an joy - so statistically they don't have many claims. Most classic policies also require the car to usually be garaged these days. In the past I have use Footman James for such policies.

If you just want a classic car as a cheap way of motoring then this is not the way to go - Condition is all (especially rust) and they need "fettling" and sometimes some periods off the road for work to be done. It's a minefield for the inexperienced - although you could get lucky!

If you intend running a classic as a daily including commuting, make sure you are covered for commutes (not all do) and make sure there is enough mileage in your estimate.

Could insure my old MB as a classic, but with the second policy nearing full NCD and commuting included, it's cheaper than classic quotes with a normal policy...i take the risk of not having an agreed value for write off.

OP its cheaper because of restrictions. Limited mileage and you usually don't earn NCB on a classic policy.

Classic owners I know only insure for the summer. In winter the car is in bits putting right all the faults which manifested themselves during the few trips out they had over the previous summer!

I don't know how different insurers compare, but I have found that their definition of 'classic' can vary. I insured a Pug 205 (1989) very reasonably at classic rates, but when I changed it for a Pug 306 (1994) that was not deemed classic enough, and I was offered a premium about 5 times higher for the same conditions.

Classic Line were 25% cheaper than Pete Best. Expect to get an even better quote now I have space to put the car in the garage. One of the upsides of lock down is at last I managed to make time to sort the garage out.

I do hardly any fettling to my own car. Choose wisely and you won't have to worry too much about maintenance or rust.
