hello there..

could anyone please have a look (listen) to this video of a serious clunking, crunching, grinding kind of noise that's coming from the driver's side front wheel area and that is becoming increasingly worse.

https://watch.wave.video/5ec29fe746e0fb0030929f99

it mostly (sometimes only) occurs when turning right (worsening the more the wheel is turned) at slow speeds especially uphill..

it's a passat estate tdi 1.9 2004

any opinions would be really appreciated, cheers!

I would guess at a worn offside outer drive shaft joint (also knows as constant velocity or CV joint)

Any advisories at the last MoT ?

Yeh, probably CV joint.

Have you looked at it?

I'd check to see if the CV boot is intact. The joint could still fail if it is, but its more likely if its split and lost its grease.

I have one wrapped in a polythene "first aid" bandage at the moment, so its only a matter of time...nasty noise.

Unless the CV joint has suddenly failed recently, that would certainly be an advisory on any recent MoT. Most testers like adding that one.

I thought a split boot was a fail rather than an advisory, but don't think I've ever had either, though I've fixed one or two before putting them in for an MOT.

Relatively easy in the UK because you can (or could) get the split boot kits. You can't get those here.in Taiwan since they are predominantly a DIY product, and there is no DIY.

Except me, obviously.

<< I thought a split boot was a fail rather than an advisory, >>

I've seen advisories along the lines of 'gaiter showing damage but preventing ingress of dirt', so it can happen.
